Monster Monday 2: Crystal Crab

Hello! I hope your summer is off to a good start! Let's keep it going with...

Monster Monday number two! Today's release is... the Crystal Crab.

Another simple enemy, but not quite as simple as last week's bat. The crab has two primary animations-- a neutral walk, and a walk with his claws snapping! This way you can have him switch between neutral and aggressive states.

Of course, there's also a fun animation for use as a transition between these two states; where he throws his claws up and down to prime his clickers! I also realized that this animation to work well if used as an "unearth" animation, so it didn't take much redesigning to also include a little "hiding underground" idle as well.

...he probably makes more sense buried in the sand at a beach... but I was using the cave tileset to test with... >_>

Now your crab can pop out and aggro the player when he gets too close. Check out how it looks in my sample prototype. This clip shows the animations in action, including transition between neutral and aggressive states:

I put together two separate sheets, so you can use whichever one works best for you. At the 100% size is a general sprite-sheet, with the animations arranged in horizontal rows: underground, neutral walk, transition, snapping walk.

The other two sheets are both in a format friendly to RPGMaker. The sheet includes the same animations, but arranged in vertical columns. Note that the animations are four (or more) frames-- the walk cycles will work with the typical "spinning" seuqnece, but you might need to be creative in how you implement the other one.

As usual, I've filled in the empty cells in both sheets with colored tiles, so that will help you with the alignment if you need to re-organize the sprites for your own needs.

So here are the downloads:

I hope you get a lot of use from this crystalline crustacean!

------

That's it for today!

I'll be back later in the week with a regular post-- probably based on something from the request thread. See you soon.

Thanks!

What engine is the recording made with?

Since you're making all these cool animations for these monsters... Any chance we'll get any side-view battlers for these?

Because it's a four-frame animation, you want to use a "spinning" sequence. that means that you'd animate it by rotating the sprite: face down, face left, face right, face up (I THINK that's the right order). Thanks!

How do you event this is RPG Maker the sprite is vertical and that engine reads sprites horizontal...
