Japanese Phonetics Episode 29 Remake—LIVE!

Bibliography
Japanese Phonetics Index Page

Good evening Patrons!

The remake of episode of lesson 29 is live! In this lesson, I offer my thoughts on and introduce a practical approach to sentence-level pitch-accent.

Much of the information found in the original lesson 29—dealing with emotions and intentions—was moved into lesson 6.3, which you can find here.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns with regards to this lesson, please don't hesitate to leave a comment below. Thank you very much for your continued support, and good luck with your Japanese studies!

It's possibly a matter of two conflicting pitch accent rules. One rule is that if a verb has a downstep, it's supposed to happen on the second to last mora of the word, like taBEru. But then there's the trailing vowel rule, which says that a downstep can't occur on a trailing vowel. There's a handful of words where these two rules overlap—where the second to last mora of the word happens to be a trailing vowel. So to use your examples, both 考える and 答える are downstep verbs with trailing vowels on their second to last mora... so you have two conflicting pitch accent rules. The same thing is likely true with downstep い-adjectives. If an い-adjective has a downstep, it's supposed to occur on the second to last mora of the word, like suZUSHIi, aOi, etc. Potentially there could be some circumstances where one rule takes precedent over another, but I haven't looked into in this in detail so I can't really say. So the simple answer is that in these examples it sounds like a case of two different rules conflicting. When this happens, it can possibly lead to multiple acceptable pronunciations.

Hi Dogen, I'm currently going through a few lessons that I need to rewatch, so I watched episode 59 which introduces the special sound rule, the trailing vowel etc. You explain the trailing vowel as "the latter vowel of a double vowel group" and of course that the downstep can't occurr on that mora. This is shown in words like 多い 帰る くりかえす。But then there are words that seemingly don't abide by the rules you introduced like 青い 考える 答える with the downstep in 考える and 答える occurring on the second to last mora (On japandict it shows both pronunciations and that they're acceptable and common). Can you give some clarification? And with what word type do I need to keep this most in mind -- nouns, adjectives or verbs? With kind regards Claes
