Each of my comrades, up until now, had been folk I believed to be willing to lay down their lives for me. But as we entered the caverns said to contain such power as to change even ourselves, doubt grew like weeds in the garden.
I beheld Vincenté grabbing such trinkets that might have value, as if to think himself sly enough to knick such items without the rest of us knowing. Always the materialistic one, he was.
Even Orok, such an honest beast, I saw her whisper to a statuette of a godess. She spent much time on this prayer, and I doubted the request she sent was virtuous or in our favor. Perhaps to save herself in the darkest of moments?
Finally, we approached the inner alcove. We had breached the chamber as a team, but upon witnessing the dire markings on the floor, our thoughts were corrupted by the notion that there was no greater threat than the threat amongst ourselves.
Orok, her large minotauran figure in the most submissive posture I had yet beheld her in her powerful physique, begged "Please, the goddess says this sigil is a corruptor! We must leave!" I envied her refusal to accept the reality the sigil had forced upon us, if it were indeed authentic.
To which Vincenté replied, "Oh, yes, and leave you and your patron to loot this temple for all it's worth? I think not!" His hands wandered towards the hilts of his daggers at his waist.
Unable to contain myself any further, I shouted "Oh yes, Vin, don't tell me you have not been stuffing your satchel with forgotten, priceless trinkets? And Orok, do you pray for us, or do you pray for yourself? How exactly does your diety feel about your comrades?"
Drawing my battleaxe from my back, I uttered the final ultimatum. "No one leaves this room until we can trust each other again, or the untrustworthy lay slain on the floor."
Little did they know, not one of them remained within my trust. I intended to kill them all.
