Japanese Phonetics Index Page

Good evening Patrons!

In this lesson, we begin to explore how particles attach to verbs, primarily heiban verbs.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns with regard to this lesson, please don't hesitate to leave a comment below. Thank you very much for your continued support, and good luck with your Japanese studies!

Episode 19.1: Verbs and particles, part I

Comments

Hi Ayub, and thank you for the comment. I haven't done this, as after doing more research on the topic, I now believe that for these more complex instances, it's actually better to simply improve your general phonetic (pitch-accent) awareness as much as possible, to try and be conscious of what natives use, and then let the pieces fall as they may (similar to the approach I recommend for i-adjectives). Naturally, this is due to the very high number of exceptions and changes based on speaker variation and circumstances. I apologize for not yet addressing this, and thank you for your understanding! Best of luck with your future Japanese studies!

Dogen

have you covered those more complex particles-attaching-to-heiban-verbs somewhere yet?

Ayub Khan '25

Hi Paco, it’s my understanding that な-adjectives follow very similar rules as nouns, but because they are not explicitly listed in those charts (as far as I know), I can’t say for sure that they are the same. For more information on な-adjectives I would encourage you to see the various lessons that I made on な-adjectives in this series. The index page can be found here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/16489306 Cheers!

Ok thank you, I have another question about the appendix of the NHK. There are charts how particles and suffixes attach to either nouns, verbs or i - adjectives. Is the noun chart also applicable for NA-adjectives? Or may I have overlooked the chart for NA-adjectives somewhere?

Paco

Hi Paco, yes your listings are correct according the NHK Accent Dictionary (2016 edition) I have on hand. Cheers!

Dogen

Hello Dogen I have a question about the accent of ~なくても in verbs. Is this the correct accent? toBANAkutemo (飛ぶ) and MInakutemo (見る) and taBEnakutemo (食べる)

Paco

Hi Lukas. It is my understanding that it does occur such that a proper downstep is audible. Cheers!

Dogen

Hi Dogen, I'd have a quick question. Does the rise in pitch to make the downstep more apparent (as seen in lesson 6.4) occur when attaching particles low to heiban verbs, as well?

Lukas Treuer

Hi Adonis! Giving the current situation I would actually probably hold off on language school and instead try something such as the Mass Immersion Approach as outlined by MattvsJapan. If you haven’t already seen the most recent video I did with him, you can find it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/long-term-road-38355581 Cheers!

Hello Dogen, I had a question about language school. So my senior year is starting in September, but after that I wanted to attend a language school, but I’m not sure if I should attend one here in America, or in Japan. My Japanese is pretty mediocre, but I’m slowly improving. I was just wondering what would be the better choice seeing that you’ve experienced both. Thank you for your time if you do end up reading this.

My bad Michail! I use a template to get these lessons out as fast as possible and missed that part of the script—it's been fixed, thank you for pointing it out!

Dogen

"The seventy-fourth episode of Japanese Phonetics is live". Wat?

Michail Smirnov

If I'm not mistaken, those are simply contractions of の and would logically follow the same pattern.

Dogen, thank you for another great lesson. I just have a quick question. Does ん (in the combination with だ) also attach low to heiban verbs? For example, 泣くんだけど、開けるんだよ、etc.
