Japanese Phonetics Episode 75—LIVE!

Hi Martin! Your English seems great to me, but to be honest I’m not entirely sure what your question is. That said, I recently talked about my thoughts on ‘devoiced accents’ in episode 6.5, which can be found here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/japanese-episode-36438446 Do you mind first watching this video to see if it answers your question? Thank you!

Hello Dogen, first of all, let me thank you for your contribution of phonological awareness and later influence on my course of study. I'd like to get your thoughts on this already intricate matter: An accent falling on a mora with a devoiced vowel — which is physically impossible, yet clearly perceived, I believe that associating devoiced mora with an accent cannot account for illusory perception nor learned response. Because, as you kindly demostrated in your video with a phrase アメリカしか, many words such as 大学生、警察官、建設省 undergo shift in accent placement and yet can be told apart. [4] だい が(く) せい h h h x L L moraic level h h L syllabic level [3] が(く) だい せい h h H x L L moraic level h H L syllabic level But then again I may be tone-deaf. So I'd love to hear from you. Thank you in advance and I beg your pardon but my English is not good, too. Best wishes, Martin https://sakura-paris.org/dict/NHK日本語発音アクセント辞典/

Hi Skabahk! Glad to hear that you're getting so much out of the series. I'm sure you'll be able to confirm a few things in the next lesson on long particle strings as well. Thank you for the support!

Oh man, we're really getting into the good s*** here. Always on the edge of my seat with this series. Next time on Japanese Phonetics - we continue with the mind explosions! It's funny, just from doing a bunch of active and passive listening, I had a feeling about だけ - and while I was watching the video, I said out loud with you "...will make proceeding nouns heiban!" lol
