Play Rock, Paper, Scissors Vs Grey

This is, by far, the biggest and weirdest video yet made for the channel.   Hope you like it, and thank you for supporting us in making stuff like this possible.

(FYI -- comments are closed for now on YouTube and elsewhere to avoid spoilers, but they are open on Patreon because you are trusted not to spoil anything for your fellow patreons and we need to know if you catch any glitches on your play through)!

Play Rock, Paper, Scissors Vs Grey

Comments

Drew.

Ian MacLean

Or just lie about what you threw, if you're going to play *that* game.

George Simpson

yea, receiving emails about stuff we can't access is fine but it would've been nice if it didn't specifically state "for bonnie bees" since I'm technically a bonnie bee and it made me confused and got my hopes up for nothing

Michelle Hao

same here! I was super excited when I got that email and then was prompted to upgrade my membership when I tried to watch it. Felt like a bait and switch...

Jana Simmons

Just a note for the future, it'd be nice if you could differentiate between the tiers because I subscribed to the bonnie bee brigade tier and got an email about the rock paper scissors directors commentary that was "for bonnie bees" and got excited until I realised I can't watch it :' (

Michelle Hao

It's kind of like the transporter. Once you've done it once what's a couple more?

Parker Bond

The fact that the failure branch goes (almost) as deep is the success branch is also insane!! Thanks Grey for the effort you put in here 🤯

Rafi Khan

-From a high school teacher who is still a high school teacher, but understands all of your frustrations with a broken system (voting, flags etc. included). Here's to the next generation.

Dan Duerden (DDuerds)

Grey, this is one of your greatest videos. The final video (not an honest playthrough) is such a wonderful message of hope amidst catastrophic odds that face humanity and life in a hostile, indifferent universe. Humans and consciousness are weird, I appreciate how you've chosen to spend your time aware of the perhaps not-freely chosen decisions we all get to make. Thanks for your work throughout the years in education, through to YouTube, Hello Internet, YouTube (a brief nod to Cortex) and beyond.

Dan Duerden (DDuerds)

I loved this, and the Director's Commentary cleared up a lot of things I didn't understand. I lost on the first try because I didn't understand that a tie would be a fail. I then cheated even before the retry because I didn't understand why a tie was a fail. Ironically, it set me up to feel ok cheating. Weird.

Hans Cathcart

Oh my God! The effort that must have got into setting all of this up. I didn't do too well on the first pass. But what I had to do was watch all your little video clips. I'm impressed by all the time you put on linking and cross linking all this information. I know that that couldn't have been a small thing. Setting up all those links and testing them must have taken days or weeks even. Well done though. A very entertaining piece.

David Collins

I seriously doubt the idea here is for him to test the real odds… they are known and easy to calculate for purely random chance, and humans are not purely random at RPS… but again that has been studied. I rather suspect cheating is intended.

Richard Rapp

I was wondering what to do on ties, but think your way makes sense, given the probabilities he's testing for.

Sarah G

Got "Rock v. Rock" on first try... Wasn't sure which way that counted (we always counted it as a "Do over" but that didn't really work here), so I counted it as a "Fail"... *sigh*

BlindSow

God, I'd love to see the YouTube analytics on this. I also shudder to think of how much time you spent making this - thanks so much!

astro

What is the outcome for rock vs rock?

Karyn Reott

Ties loose. He says it in one of the early videos.

Christopher Ulichney

I would love to know the total amount of videos that had to be made to cover all the possible outcomes. And what is the total runtime of all those videos.

Christopher Ulichney

Really looking forward to director's commentary for this one 🤞

Roeland

Draw is a lose according to video.

James Patton

That is literally YouTube Proper - their websites. It worked on AppleTV perfectly, tho. (Midroll cards never work on AppleTV, but endroll cards do)

Crissa Kentavr

I would go through YouTube proper instead of embedded video in patron Hopefully that fixes it

James Patton

Or did you? Play again on better setup for YouTube

James Patton

Would’ve been cool. Though I could see how limitations of if he is allowed three cards on vertical YouTube would’ve been allowed. Honestly other than the first throw I wasn’t confused at all and answered truthfully. (I think he purposely made it easy to cheat so I don’t think the timestamps would be to bad)

James Patton

He picks the same choice every time you watch the video so you can win by writing down the right choice and restarting the video.

Jesse Gillespie

Me too! ^v^

Paris Doherty

Nothing beats rock.

Jesse Gillespie

Apparently all rock all the time was not the right strategy.

Andy Shih

Played fair. Failed immediately. Lesson learned.

Philip S

I came here to say this! I kept getting trapped in decision paralysis over whether a tie was win or fail. Based on the odds he specifies I think ties go to the house (i.e. we lose).

Neal Jennings

I do think it would have been better to have 3 end card videos, one for each of the rock, paper, scissors in each round, two of which link to the lose video and one to the win video. Only downside of this is every video would need to be the same length, otherwise you can tell from the timestamp on each video which one is the odd one out (and therefore the winner), rather than just choosing win or lose.

Zaphod

Made it to the under 40,000k club! That was fun!

Sarah P.

I had to go through after I had lost. My curiosity was burning a hole in my brain. But those final, final odds? Nah, Grey you made that for those gods of luck. And I'm afraid it wasn't me. Maybe in a month or a year, once I've completely forgotten what you first played on my attempts, will I have another crack. And when I do, I'll let you know here how it goes

Zutia

Grey, you beat me well and truly. I out-mindgamed myself the moment you spoke of the weird foreshadowing. I trawled back through the video and looked hard. Then I fell over at the first round. I was so disappointed. Thank you, Grey 🩶

Zutia

I lost so much that I was basically winning... Loved that twist after all of my second tries.

Holly L

Enjoyed this! Played honest through to the end, and then not-so-honest to see where it went.

Colton Myers (@basepi)

Love this so much. What an amazingly entertaining video. Made it to the 12,000 club on the knowledge that you always said and threw rock to your class. I thought you were going for the ultimate bluff by not saying, but no - I was wrong. Exited quickly after that from chances 2 and 3. Definitely didn't choose your own adventure book into seeing the ending...

Andrew Smith

I'm dumb I can't figure the link or what I'm supposed to follow after the first "match"😭

Elizabeth Calvert

Looking forward to the Cortex deep dive sure to follow.

Mark Wolgin

I lost, but I thank you for this opportunity comrade Grey. Post-game message time.

Comm Luke

I stand by my choice. Edit: python -c "import random; print(*[random.choice(['Rock', 'Paper', 'Scissors']) for _ in range(13)], sep='\n') # ndarrays are more elegant and performant than list comprehensions, but I concede that it is possible to use the builtin random library if one desires purity."

NoSmallParts

You can use random.choice() without numpy

TheZehn

For those who truly wish to play fair. python -c "import numpy; print(*numpy.random.choice(['Rock', 'Paper', 'Scissors'], 13), sep='\n'). # No Spoilers"

NoSmallParts

What are you supposed to do with ties?

J. Siebring

What a fun little game! Delightfully unexpected, and pleasantly pushes the boundaries of youtube videos as a medium

Jacob Herold

oh man, i sound like my QA tester i'm sorry. i realy sincearly enjoied this game. and isn't enshuring high quality the highest form of appreciation? anyways, i love youre videos. every single one of them, even if they send me out of the maze ... again 😅🥰

Asser tores

This was really fantastic. What an incredibly amount of effort this must have taken. I did poke around some other paths just to see it and it's so impressive. Thanks for making this.

Chris Mason

losing at the very last round to a million and trying again will give you the win option twice. no lose option available.

Asser tores

Damn, got to the 1 in 12,000 club first try, then failed out of my second try immediately 😅 , and for to round two of my third try

Parker Rivera

absolutely love this and didn't cheat at all no no that would be ridiculous :DD

JazzBootz

Must say, not a fan of this. I didnt realize the point of the game till the end, I thought we were intended to just follow the wins. I don't think the format is that good--it would be better to make it an ACTUAL game of chance, not show Grey's throw and not label the options 'win' and 'lose'. I dunno, it just seemed like a waste of time to watch. Sorry Grey, I normally I like your videos, but this one was a miss for me.

Phoenix Ryzing

and for the to 10 anti-luckyest player.

Asser tores

same goes for the 26 loosing streak (the 1 in ~59000 odds one)

Asser tores

Outstanding

Brothelsprout

failing 15 times (the one with 1 in 438 odds) is missing the turbo mode shortcut thingy on the top right. (not in the video but in the youtube configuration)

Asser tores

Edited. Good call! ❤️

Jesse Ronco

Fantastic new game design. I hope somewhere in the maze there is a yeti waiting for someone.

Gregg Simms

I lost hard, I checked the winning side and it was a nice message

Nabeal Corrigan

By the way, great work, @CGP Grey!! 👏

Tomas Klos

The first lost-video explains that ties are not-wins and therefore counted as losses. (And please don't spoil.) If you're uncertain about the general rules of what beats what, that's in the starting video.

Tomas Klos

I lost the first eight plays in a row. Indeed I felt quite special! :-D

Tomas Klos

He mentions in one of the videos that draws are considered losses.

Skyler Brill Sedat

Don't spoil please.

Tomas Klos

Fun with a directed graph database later, and I won't spoil anything, but wow, the amount of work here is impressive. And dark.

Scott Seligman

I lost on the second round anyway but still want to know what I was supposed to do.

DrWex

How are you supposed to handle ties? I did rock to your rock - what do I pick?

DrWex

"It's just three minutes long, how could it be the biggest and most complex thing Grey has made?" THREE MINUTES LATER "Oh. Oh my. Oh my my."

Rich Martin

title cards only worked for me for the first video (the embedded one here at patreon), after that it sent me to youtube and my setup isn't good for that, I guess. anyway, I lost the second round 😅

Aner Nitsan

Given the shadows over the table, I’m guessing CGP is treating that as a failure.

Trevin Beattie

played on both PC and mobile after I shared the vid on texts. Lost both on second round. I look forward to post game chat/video from Grey

DankFlamage

Lost in the first round.... Well, that's what I get!

MidnaMajora

Hate it. My OCD compells me to explore all the options but there are so many combi nations.

Bartosz Błaszkiewicz

I lost first round 😞

Jesse Ronco

Unfortunately, the title cards don't always work on Mac/iOS so hum.

Crissa Kentavr

Exactly what happened to me too haha

Deryn

Loved this little game and a bit amazed thinking of the work that must have gone into it. I only made it to the top 111,111, but statistically speaking I'm probably in pretty good company. :D

Mystic Argus

This was so much fun! What a great Idea...

frank sands

That was so much fun and I'm sure so much work to put together. Of course I didn't win, but I had to make sure you got as many views as possible, so after I lost I clicked through all of the wins.

Lynx88

I really enjoyed this, despite losing very very early on. Later I’ll cheat to see all the paths - seems like a ton of work to keep everything straight.

Leaf

Try 10 in a row lol.

Andrew

“Scientists have calculated that the chances of something so patently absurd actually existing are millions to one. But magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten.” ― Terry Pratchett, Mort

David Johnson

From the "red pill" outcome + lose (or maybe win?) there seems be a mis-link which loops back to the 1-in-1000 video. Regretfully I didn't record the exact sequence.

Steve Bonds

I lost five in a row before finally winning.

j-beda

This is absolutely awesome! Great idea, I love these kind of videos of yours, keep up the good work man

Lorenzo Cadei

Based on the silhouette hands, draws are always losses in this game.

Randall Wald

Yes, ties are losses.

Randall Wald

I saw the same (at around 1:12 in the video), but since that was when Grey was emphasizing his "vast, virtual hall," I thought maybe it was intentional, to allude to us all being in the Matrix or something.

Randall Wald

Having played (and lost fairly early), I have to wonder: were Grey's choices random, or was there strategy involved? Because although everything Grey did was predetermined, he could still play knowing the exact state up until that point, and could strategize based on that.

Randall Wald

I lost hard core

Andrew Herrera

This is fun! It is something I have to come back to, as I want to see every possible outcome.

Katherine Aumer

So I went to the very end after failing after 3 and honestly grey that message in a bottle gave me full body chills. I hope more folks go through and see it and I hope that millennia from now a true winner claims that prize.

William Jackson

I had something that looks like an encoding glitch in the last video. https://youtu.be/dU22iL1ZsWQ?si=NVdVIQW9jVmv97IT

Tomer

Or do I need to not do this on my phone?

Jack Locke

Do links work now or will they be included on YouTube?

Jack Locke

Oh this is amazing!!!!

Jack Locke

I don't recommend using the same choice every time as I managed to fail immediately. Neat video idea Grey, I totally enjoyed it! I hope I didn't mess up your stats by replaying the video in several sections to see what other alternative video outcomes you created!

Sean

Got to the under 40k club, then things went poorly.

Kurkistan

The stick finger hands at the bottom indicate that as a loss.

Mark Millford

To bad I have literally no interest in this, but good luck to ya finding someone.

Superk

Ahh, yeah. And I also just noticed that it's specified in the first loss video.

lego_met

Also, why not enable comments on the 'end lobby' video, since anyone watching it has already completed the game, so can have spoiler discussions in the comments on that video without spoiling for anyone else

Zaphod

I am wondering if Grey will make a video about the results of this series, analysing the odds ...

Benoit-Pierre DEMAINE

They are losses - he shows the losing hands, and reminds us that 2/3rds of every round fail

Chris Fulton

That moment when you get clotheslined by CGP not once, but twice, finally win a round, just to eat the tarmac a third time.

Luke Spencer

I got a double draw and I dont know what to do ;-; I dont feel like Ive earned it!

Wash__

I do think that a draw in Rock, Paper Scissors is usually "go again" but I guess CGP could only code binary options

enchantedsleeper

End cards?

enchantedsleeper

I didn't cheat, and inevitably did fall out of the running but HOLY SHIT this must have taken SO MUCH WORK to put together and keep track of all the paths. A million, nay, a billion kudos to you

enchantedsleeper

I'm reminded of a Discworld quote, though I can't find it exactly. I think it was from Small Gods? "The thing about one in a million chance, is that they happen nine times out of ten"

Maarten Daalder

I really want to go through again with my knowledge and see the "good" end but I know its cheating! what to do...

Robert Wilkinson

Same question! Would love to know what to do in case of a draw. (I wound up with 2 draws, opting to fail the first one and pass the second one to even it out)

lego_met

There's no "Draw" option. Is that a Win or a Loss?

Michael Kubler

I cannot imagine the insane work it must've taken to get all the pieces linked together! This was a delightful experience even though I only won one round lol

sporanges

I Made it honestly to 1 in a billion on my 2nd chance so thank you for the fun and stressful game. Which I both loved and hated.

Aaron Grindstaff

I had a draw 😭 Planned on making that very choice before I even opened the video

Glyn Davies

i got about 4 correct in a row before the final failure, that was exciting!

Dan

I hope that somewhere there's a very convoluted whiteboard where grey worked these branches out

Ty Yok

Well, this took significantly less time then I have hopped for. Will cheating break some stats or can we have a look around?

Landsil

I cheated ... but love this series !!!

Benoit-Pierre DEMAINE

I lost the first round :(

Orion Dye

Grey virtually holding my hand was cute.

Sean P Costello

Oof, consecutive losses. I really did burn all my luck earlier this week.

Jordan P

given the odds, I think that means draw is a fail

Sarah Peper 🏳️‍⚧️

Can we post the paths we took here?

Favio Ferreira

Try again on a different device. Trust me you want the end cards.

Favio Ferreira

yeah, I ran into draw as well

Sarah Peper 🏳️‍⚧️

Fell at the first hurdle lol. How many videos are there though? Must be hundreds lol. Will there be a behind the scenes showing a 'map' of the permutations?

Zaphod

This was so cool. Love this format!

Serina G

Interesting is probably the wrong word there. Mind bending? I just want to see what the back end of this mayhem looks like.

Andy Sneesby

I can only imagine the labyrinthian network of videos that this looks like on the back end. Cheers!

Anita Hoffman

I’ve watched all of Grey’s videos (yes, including the teacher ones) and this “video” is by far the most interesting/engaging/dangling over the edge of some teetering tower of YouTube cards. My son (16) and I had a GREAT time. Thank you. The last video that made me this gobsmacked was the dragon tyrant, but for different reasons. Superb, Mr Grey.

Andy Sneesby

I lost first thing, but I didn’t see any end cards, so that’s fine.

Andrew Bethards

Failed until I couldn't fail further. Chuckled at the hand sanitizer.

J Passmore

LWLL

Kyle Askine

Ah I see. Fixed and thank you!

CGP Grey

Very fun video!

A.C.3

Draw = lose.

A.C.3

Well that was fun. Made it further than I thought I would

Vivalldi

I was totally confused as to what to do in case of a tie... but as others have pointed out the bottom of the screen shows ties under "Fail"... plus the choice of the word "Fail" instead of "Loose" seems like an intentional choice... but it really through me for a loop. (And treating them as a loss changes changes strategy I think since a traditionally a tie is usually "live to fight another day", where as here its "game over"... so I wish that rule had been called out clearer).

Harogbind Khalsa

Are you sure it's missing end cards? Looks like they are working on our end.

CGP Grey

Man, I fell down early.

GregD

Really cool idea. Guessing stats will be pulled from video views per segment?

CurioCorvo

I need to know how much time did it take to set up all of this on YouTube 😂😂 Only linking the correct videos one after the other may have needed a week 🤯

Àlex Ribas Villanueva

This one is missing its end cards. Yes I cheated to get here. Don't click this video if you don't want to be spoiled. ☘️ RTh15W ✅ I've removed the link to prevent spoilerage but kept the code for posterity.

Brian Kelleher

Watch it again and "forgett" his choice? :D

Konstantin Schilling

Draw is a loss. The bottom of the screen shows what wins and looses.

CurioCorvo

Are we calling ties losses? Can't really redo rounds in a game across time

Zachary Hilliker

Yes I won

Chriself

I got to 1 in 294 on my second chance and went out immediately on my last chance, I wonder what the rest of the videos are like, I won't go back and lie my way to either end, at least for now. I wonder if these videos will still be up a while from now so that I can try and get through all the videos without ruining any statistics going on here.

Nicole J Strobel

What do you do if it’s a draw?

Favio Ferreira
