He has the voice of an angel. Lucifer, to be specific.

Yeah I kinda feel like everybody's finally shaking off the post-pandemic dust a little.

Shiny Skunk

What, you didn't love Stu Cook's work on Mardi Gras? (That's one of Todd's best episodes.)

Beau Dure

Check out FD Signifier, he's a genuine oldhead and he'd got an older Drake essay that really gives a lot of context to how the hiphop community has handled Drake over the years. Good stuff!

Clementine Danger

FWIW, hope you're doing ok IRL Todd. We all love and appreciate you and your work here.

To me, the damning line is, "That ain't just me, that what the culture feeling." This beef wouldn't have half the impact it did if it weren't for the fact that the public is just TIRED of Drake. He's the biggest star in the world, but he's been coasting for years creatively and has been doing really shady shit in the interim. Someone needed to let him have it, and Kendrick was the only man for the job.

SPBurke

Not Gonna Lie, I almost thought that the title in the video itself was saying the video was 30 hours!

Joseph Adams

13:11 typo on "lied"

Rob Wilson

i'm surprised you didn't mention the shots Megan took at Drake in Hiss as well, she was the first person to bring up the BBL stuff

Rob Wilson

It finally happened. Todd and The Melon collab, sort of

Harrison Bieth

Meanwhile, in Toronto, a security guard at Drake's mansion was shot yesterday.

Error spotting: at 14:17 the cover art for Not Like Us disappears into an iStock graphic.

One of my first thoughts hearing meet the grahams was that Kendrick's main goal was to ensure drake can't just brush this off and keep going like he did with story of adidon. I suspect that if he has hard proof of anything, it's probably the human trafficking stuff and he's holding off as long as possible to maximize damage or for legal reasons, most of the other accusations on both sides kinda seem like informed guesswork based on old tabloid stories

Couple things I noticed on first pass: 1) Whitney is Kendrick’s fiancee/partner, not his wife. Drake has a line about that in “Family Matters” “Proposed in 2015 but don’t wanna make her your actual wife” otherwise it would kind of be semantics, but since it’s part of the beef might be worth changing. 2) I think the Toronto shooting probably merits mention for the full version, or at least an edit in as B roll before the last gag. Great to see you put together an overview of the whole situation and give some thoughtful commentary, as per usual. I appreciate a video like this in a sea of hourlong line-by-line breakdowns.

I'm such a lame white person that the first thing I think about when I see the name "Drake" is how much Jerry and Elaine dislike the Him.

Kristopher Bluth

Uh, Todd? Nicki Minaj may have thrown herself on the Hiss grenade, but it was definitely aimed at Drake ( and Tory Lanez) for the most part? Not sure how you missed that, so just wanted to let you know.

Elizabeth M Hyde

That's most likely related to the Weeknd's label XO, since his manager was shot recently most likely by someone affiliated with Drake's label OVO.

Manny Marmol

I think you said in the MC Hammer video that the problem with diss tracks is there's a shelf life of intrigue on them, and in retrospect they just seem whiny and counterproductive, especially when some of those beefs ended with someone dead. That's how I feel here - it's just a bunch of drama for people who want music to be more like Real Housewives. When it escalates to serious but unconfirmed accusations it is ugly and joyless, because it's neither funny nor do you want it to be true.

Cody Baird

So did CCR (but a lot less successfully)

Judgesaturn507

True, it's a big departure since the charts have mostly been absent of 'conversation' (apart from racist country music) since the end of the pandemic.

Judgesaturn507

This was supposed to be the year I stopped paying attention to pop music as closely to focus on my own life. You know when was the LAST time I tried that? 2019. Right around the time Old Town Road hit the charts. Following pop music is kinda like quicksand.

Judgesaturn507

Someone pointed out that a lot of people write diss tracks at each other, but Fleetwood Mac members wrote diss tracks about each other. Christine McVie writing a song about sleeping with a crew member and having her barely ousted husband play bass on it — that’s OG right there.

Beau Dure

At 13:10 the lyrics for "Meet the Grahams" say "you liked" instead of "you lied"; typo?

Chamois Chui

Thanks Todd. I'll definitely check out more perspectives but this was a great TL:DR about all the moving parts of this fued. I was supremely out of the loop on this whole thing.

Bailey Vogt

Shout out to the "Drake is owned by Kendrick Lamar" in the credits.

Castleknackers

Yeah, that's... honestly how I felt? It was -interesting-, it felt like a serious, major event going on.

BloodyM

IDK.... I'm just glad that new music is interesting again? not to say that there weren't interesting things going on before or how this feud didn't go too far but I can't recall the last time I was this engage emotionally and mentally with what's is actually is actively coming out. Maybe that's just me and at the end of the day it won't be worth it (I really do hope that Kendrick isn't a wife beater and Drake isn't an open secret in the music industry that just no one did anything about) but I can't be mad for being drawn in like this for the first time in a long time.

Nir revel

Considering there was an actual shooting outside of Drake’s mansion in Toronto just yesterday, it already feels like there’s more to add onto the end of this video.

James Zhang

Drake finally made me understand people shitting on Nickelback for a whole ass decade. Maybe if I could ignore him that'd be one thing but I fully saw that man's dick.
