ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "The Hustle" by Van McCoy

Let's try this again. Sorry for everyone who got the email last night, there was some kind of glitch in the file that I had to fix.

Also: PLEASE PLEASE CLICK THIS LINK. I need votes for the Song vs. Song poll!  https://www.patreon.com/posts/poll-if-i-could-29963197  Best diva comeback song of the '80s, Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time" or Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do with It?"

ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "The Hustle" by Van McCoy

Comments

Not only can we dance the Hustle, we learned to dance the Hustle when the Hustle was new.

It's weird the number of hugely famous songs I'm entirely unfamiliar with. I like that flute tho

Nowhere Girl

700 copyrights by the age of 39. Holy hell.

Maura Burns

I, for one, still hold Los Del Rio and the Macarena in high regard.

Josh Spicer

"Hold On, I'm Comin'" by Sam and Dave

Thomas Carmody

I also most associate the song with that specific Futurama episode with Fry's dog. (Same with 'Walking on Sunshine' tbh) But even with that clip, I also feel like I've heard 'The Hustle' from a gazillion other sources and references in movies/TV. That song is as much a pop culture institution as the 'Psycho' shower scene or Scooby-Doo.

Franco del Rosario

Which 1966 song is it at 5:11? Thanks in advance and great video as always.

Elad Liebman

My school's dance teacher is right in the middle of teaching this to the 7th graders!

Aw, I was hoping to see my name in the credits on this one..

candidgamera

Perhaps, but the song itself apparently came out in 1980, as did Funkytown. Not sure when and at what spot Funkytown peaked at though.

The best disco is the Bee Gees.

Josh Liller

Brb, going to make the funkytown/hustle mashup now

Fantastic video

Kathrin Shawcross

Seconded.

Wouldn't Kool & The Gang's Celebration be considered the last disco #1 hit in February 1981?

Now I want to see a One Hit Wonderland on Funkytown.

Or Gregg Alexander. Okay, You Get What You Give isn't quite as "goofy" but he's still a prolific songwriter even after ending the New Radicals project.

How fitting: It's the first video I support on Patreon and it was the first thing I learned in my dancing lessons ages ago.

I'm actually rather surprised that the clip of Fry doing The Hustle on Futurama didn't find its way into this video at any point.

AnalogSkullerosis

Can't wait to watch this one.

For those interested in more retro top 10 lists, Sean Fay Wolfe of Diamond Axe Studios is currently running a series of the Top 10 Worst and Best Hit Songs of this year, 1975. The first half of the worst list is already out ln his channel and part 2 is coming soon.

Brad Riegner

I remember hearing this song on one episode of The Simpsons.

RedBedroomRecords

Anyone feel sorry for the poor dude constantly falling over in the roller disco clip? Not me!

Sykonee

Update: Working for me now. It was automatically going to the version I downloaded earlier. Looking forward to the second half!

The Hustle: the Harlem Shake of the 70s

"Person who was actually super productive and important to the entertainment industry but is mostly known for their one kind of goofy pop hit" has become my favourite subgenre of OHW (see also Trevor Horn, Toni Basil, Rick Derringer, etc.).

Joe G

I know this song mainly from the scene in the Lorax movie where the mum dances with the artifical tree.

Heartofaquamarine

Try refreshing? I don't know, it's definitely working on my end

Todd in the Shadows

It's showing 17:12 for me. Haven't actually watched far enough in to see if anything happens to it, though.

Azhrei Vep

Is it still just the 8 minute video for anyone else? Lol
