SONG vs. SONG: Poll part 2!

Because of scheduling issues me and Dan are gonna have to record quick so I'm throwing up a second poll so that we can get that out of the way! Vote which is the better '80s girly pop anthem below!

Comments

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun hands down though my choice it is mainly due to my preferring Cyndi Lauper over Madonna rather than any subjective comparison of quality.

Connor Vance Shelton

definitely girls just wanna have fun - it has a crucial self-awareness element to the lyrics that material girl lacks imo.

"Girls". I can't stand Lauper's voice but "Material Girl" is the UGLIEST single Madonna released in the '80s (when she still had a soul).

I just think of growing up in the 90s, and Material Girl felt like it had already become dated kitsch. But Girls was something I could hear peers put on during a party. Girls just always felt like the more enduring/endearing tune.

girls has just aged better

Tricky, Material Girl sounds a little better in my opinion but Girls Just Want To Have Fun has much better lyrics... While I'd normally be inclined to go with sound over lyrics, Material Girl's lyrics bug me enough that I'll go with GJWHF.

Katherine Jennings

Girls just wanna have fun is silly and entertaining. The best thing Material Girl ever did was inspire Barbie Girl.

Azhrei Vep

It's a personal preference. I've always preferred Cyndi over Madonna. Madonna is super self serious and Cyndi made the theme to Pee Wee's Playhouse. I get that vibe in the songs. Cyndi's song makes me just want to have fun, and I'm a guy.

Never been a fan of Madonna... Don't know why, she has a fine voice and her songs are ok...but I find myself skipping her songs when they come on. Girls just wanna have fun wins for me.

Girl Just Wanna Have Fun is a delightful anthem of women challenging the patriarchy's view of them, Material Girl is just a year round version of Santa Baby.

Jennifer Miller

At the end of the day, while many view Laupr as a Madonna knockoff, GJWHF is bouncy and upbeat and has a more positive message than "Boys, I AM a Gold digger".

Jennifer Miller

I find both of these songs really obnoxious, but Madonna is at least a better singer. The production and songwriting on both are dated as fuck.

Gordon Stearns

GJWHF is an anthem for girls. Material Girl is only an anthem for Madonna . I like both songs but I am going with Cyndi.

Save

In honor of The Captain, I have to go Girls just wanna have fun.

Greg Walters

The orgasm yelping in Material Girl annoys me. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is...for lack of a better word, fun. Also, I heard Madonna doesn’t perform Material Girl anymore because she finds it shallow and materialistic in hindsight.

Yvette

Picking Girls Just Wanna Have Fun because I don't think they put Material Girl on a DDR game.

Celery

Material Girl's chorus irritates me to no end. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun's does not. I'm backing Cyndi on this one.

Ridd

Material girl is about one girl. Girls just want to have fun is about all girls. The latter wins.

I love both songs so long as they aren't played often, but Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is about celebrating being a girl with your girls. Material Girl is more a song about a girl who is more or less a gold digger.

I decline to vote for a cover song

Honestly I struggled to remember how Material Girl goes, but Girls popped right in there, so not a hard choice.

Natalie Koppen

Apologies to the fans in advance, but I really, really hate both these songs. I think I’ll have to go with Madonna because her singing on that song isn’t nearly as obnoxious as Lauper’s.

Ethan Michael Thomas

Material Girl, because we somehow had a tape of Madonna videos when I was a kid and this song enthralled me. I didn't hear Girls Just Want to Have Fun until we immigrated west when I was older.

Alina

Even though Material Girl isn't a cover, all I can hear whenever I hear it is the Sesame Street version.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun makes me want to rip both of my ears off.

Toryana Frazier

Oh, Lauper, no question. Material Girl is a fine song, but as far as girl anthems go it can’t compare.
