ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "She Blinded Me with Science" by Thomas Dolby

This one turned out way too long! Turns out Dolby has done a LOT.

Comments

As someone with a weirdly unnatural love for the Fern Gully soundtrack... this was some informative shiz.

Deanna Banana

Nah I'm with ya. I get why he uses Vimeo instead of YT for the 3-day lead time and general back-up, but it's still annoying when it has to take time to buffer every few minutes.

Josh Spicer

That would be similar to The Buggles' OHW episode--Don Was must have produced as many albums as Trevor Horn.

Joe G

The big one for me from that time in his soundtrack work was "The Mirror Song" from Toys. I LIKED "TOYS" STOP LAUGHING AT ME

Noah Ramon

Now having watched it : WORTH EVERY GODDAMNED PENNY. HELL, YEAH. Thank you again!

Noah Ramon

Am I the only one who has issues with Todd's videos because he use Vimeo. It feels like they never load, I constantly have to refresh them...Just ugh.

Amy Poli

Also, I'm bummed no one requested 99 Luftballoons. I've been waiting for it since the series started!

Meowlissa

Oh wow, I didn't even realize he was a OHW. I thought Hyperactive was a much bigger hit, because MTV I guess.

Meowlissa

How sure are you that Dolby doesn't believe the earth is flat? It is certainly a "factoid" I see repeated in many corners of the internet that he believes the earth is flat, and he is member 0001 of the international flat earth society.

Dab Brill

I always thought Hyperactive was by the Human League. It was on the GTA Vice City soundtrack.

Petty Officer No Class

But which song has more poetry in motion, this one or Dance The Kung-Fu?

Pietro Gagliardi

I know there was a lot of info, but I wish you"d have brought up how Mobb Deep Sampled SBMWS and had the biggest hit of their career with it.

In case anyone didn't know, "Ms. Sakamoto" is Akiko Yano, the then-wife of Ryuichi Sakamoto. She's a genius in her own right and amazing musician: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUxfFBOUSZU

The funny thing is, while "She Blinded Me with Science" is from 1982, it was actually a Billboard hit in 1983, so in fact, its timing wasn't quite perfect initially.

Jacqueline Sailer

I'changed my name one month ago, by the way. And yes, Hyperactive from GTA Vice City, have heard it way too much because of this.

Joss Strand

I actually did know about Rockula. CR reviewed it a few years back and legitimately likes it. Shame you didn't know, this could have been just a big ex-CA crossover.

Jennifer Miller

I'm glad you did this one. I was waiting for Hyperactive, both because I like it much better than Blinded, and also because I knew practically nothing about it's history or place in the Dolby discography. I first heard it in GTA Vice City and it's been a go-to high energy song for me ever since.

Pooga

I love Dolby so much. Airwaves is maybe my favorite of his songs, but One of Our Submarines is also really good. Also, I love his look in the 80's.

Dolby also wrote "Roll Back The Rock To The Dawn Of Time" from We're Back: A Dinosaur's Story.

Tony Goldmark

Surprised you didn't mention that Dolby is now an actual professor:https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/reliable-source/wp/2014/03/06/she-blinded-me-with-science-singer-thomas-dolby-to-be-hopkins-professor/

LifeIsStrange

I'm a bit sad that "The Gate to the Minds Eye" wasn't included in the later career coverage. "Nuvogue" was one of his best songs, but the rest of that album really went along with this song.

Michael Russell

Howard the Duck is a good movie, you want unwatchable? Try those godawful Paranormal Activity sequels.

LifeIsStrange

I don't mind Vimeo. And I know it's leagues better than YouTube on almost all fronts. But I will say the stop and stutter buffering is annoying.

Josh Spicer

Yay! Looking forward to this. I'm a huge fan of Dolby. I kinda wish someone would request "Walk the Dinosaur" just because the Was (not Was) discography is SO good and SO wide-ranging.

Matt Keeley

DANG IT WE'RE JUST ABOUT TO GO TO BED NOOOOO THE ANTICIPATION (Seriously - thanks, boss - looking forward to this one, and I'm sorry for all the work we put you through!)

Noah Ramon

Todd blinded us with this video. Sleep? Who needs that, time to watch it.
