POP SONG REVIEW: "Freaky Friday" by Lil Dicky ft. Chris Brown

Comments

Just curious, Todd. ARE you excited by electric trains?

Rish Outfield

The sad thing is that in theory, this is actually kind of a genius concept for a song I haven't really seen anyone else tackle that's at least become a recent sort of hit, and honestly something that really could actually work. Yes, even with Chris Brown. Here's the thing though: this is the kind of song where for it to work you would have to be a master lyricist who isn't afraid to get incredibly dark and potent with they're content. Lil Dicky should of used the opportunity to total bust apart and blast Chris Brown and realize how much it sucks to be him instead of "ha ha I'm in a black guy's body n-word n-word n-word giant black cock random celebrities" I mean come on actualy take some actual serious digs instead of trying to play it up being nice since... yeah that's just kind of lame in this scenario and not really funny. Seriously this is a concept gone at full force could of killed but I guess we would of needed someone other then Lil Dicky. Heck I'm pretty sure Todd would of been able to write a better song lyric wise then this since as self depreciating as he can be he can still shoot some serious venom especially at Chris Brown which again a song concept like this really needs.

This garbage got to #1 in New Zealand. I didn't think there could be any song worse than 'Marvin Gaye' (the Charlie Puth song, for anyone who doesn't know) at the top of our charts, but once again I underestimated the terrible taste of the NZ music-buying public. On behalf of all Kiwis with good music taste, I am so, so, SO sorry.

Grace

The year is still young. Can't wait to see what'll top this in the next seven months...

Calling this song "absolute fucking garbage" is far too kind. Seriously, it will always baffle me how this kind of horrifying slop comes to exist at all, let alone get popular.

The stereotype of the mystical ~~orient~~.

Martha Boatright

There was more humor and charisma in DJ Khaled's one line than the entire rest of the song. Seriously, God bless DJ Khaled. I don't know what he does but he does it well.

Meowlissa

UUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHH, good GOD. The first time I heard this song, I thought, "I can't wait for Todd's take on this one." And here you are!

E. Avery Beckett

Well, another good reason to hate Ed Sheeran. At least something I've learned.

Oh man that Kendall Jenner bit had me laughing my ass off.

LifeIsStrange

Eh i'm over being outraged at Chris Brown at this point, if Rihanna could forgive him so can I, it's just not worth being mad at him anymore. Personally i'm way more pissed at Kanye for turning his back on the black community by praising Trump(and insulting John Legend).

LifeIsStrange

Pretty sure Chris Brown ain't the most domestic abuser alive-what about Sean Penn?

LifeIsStrange

How is magic fortune cookie problematic?

LifeIsStrange

I'm fairly sure you used the outro song already in your OneRepublic/Imagine Dragons video.

Gordon Stearns

For what it's worth, we DO know you aren't Jewish, since you mentioned going to church as a kid in your "Flood" one hit wonderland episode!

It's been a while since we got an old-fashioned Chris Brown rant.

Gordon Stearns

Honestly, the DJ Khaled bit is probably the best part of the song.

Ridd

oh look, it's the guy whose weed song i listened to for a week because my friend likedit

Andy Bene

I'm guessing lil d hasn't done anythinggood since he accidentally explained privilege in "damn it's good to be a white guy"

Greg Walters

... well, that song repulsed me on a visceral level. I'm super glad Todd listens to the charts for me...

Charles Arthur

I’ve been waiting for you to cover lil Dicky for a while, but not like this...I’m a bit disappointed that he came out as a promo for his new album. I strongly encourge anyone to listen to Russell Westbrook on a farm. He raps over pound cake by drake and it shows off his strengths as a rapper and a lyricist.

Also...why is it less cool to be Ed Sheeran? Ed Sheeran has banged plenty of hot chicks in spite of looking dorkish, and he doesn't have a "controversial past" to be worried about.

Martha Boatright

One of my students (aged 4) has been singing the start of this chorus so I know he's heard it somewhere (sigh) and I didn't want to give the video the hits by checking it out so thank you for this review.

Martha Boatright

Well that was brutally terrible. I hadn't even heard about the ending, that's almost as catastrophically dumb as the rest of it.

Jonathan P

A wild "As far as YOU know" appears!

Yeah, I've had a feeling you'd be reviewing this one since I heard it on the radio a few weeks ago. Which, for the record, it's playing ALL THE TIME on the radio here, so it's definitely getting some play. Also, I have fun whenever you talk about Chris Brown.

Daniel Beckett

Wow. What an awful song that I wish you had never introduced me to. I mean ... good review, spot on, and all. But for once I kinda regret watching. Ignorance was bliss.

Azhrei Vep

I hope Todd is still executive of the ‘stop singers from thinking they’re funny foundation’ as I suspect there’s been an influx in donations...

Ebonyeora

Well I already see a strong candidate for your #1 worst song of 2018.

Crow

Ohhh boy. This song is a special kind of special :/

This is the cringiest song I've heard this year

Will Seamon

I still care.
