POP SONG REVIEW: "Something Just Like This"

POP SONG REVIEW: "Something Just Like This"

Comments

The new 4 chords of pop is a really great observation!

K Wrede

Wow, that is great! I always appreciated both shred guitar and electronic music, but the two are so rarely combined well. Always great to hear another exception.

The part about guitar solos over the drop reminded me of this underappreciated song from last year, Go! by M83, featuring a fantastic Steve Vai guitar solo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3YZTYXftzg

Meh, I'll take this over 'Closer' because at least Chris Martin can sing and isn't an insufferable douchebag. Also, songs like 'Fix You' can become a lot better outside of their recorded context. It was brought out at the recent Manchester benefit concert, and the real-life context surrounding the event really elevated the song (IMO).

It is definitely one of those songs you don't mind on the radio and might jam too, but won't be in either's group pantheon of great songs. I love old Coldplay and like the new stuff too, cause they have done well to adapt to the changing music scene. While I did wish lyrics in general flew better in much of pop, I'll take good stuff when I get it

Wait, the fourth line is "Hercules and his gifts"? I thought he was still talking about Achilles, because the way he pronounces the two names are damn near identical.

This review was so cathartic for me. My English major self has been brooding about "Achielles and his gold" for weeks now.

So Coldplay got better for you after Brian Eno decided to produce them and forced them out of their comfort zone by telling them that every song had to sound different? That's when I stopped hating them too.

Great video Todd! Strange song, it's another meeeehhhh song for another meeeehhhh year of "HIT" music. It's got its pluses, but overall meeeehhhh.

I can't stand the lyrics in this song. It's not just that they're lazy and inaccurate, they don't even flow in any kind of comfortable way. The melody of the song is already so sloppy they could've really used some punchy vocals to keep it on track. Not to mention it's an incredibly cringey cool dad move to make a series of direct superhero references in a pop song. Ugh. No thanks.

That first verse. I don't know if it is the light show at the venue or the way that Chris Martin is singing nonsense, but all I could think of was Incredible Thoughts from Popstar: never stop never stopping.

Oh boy I can't wait for this to be on YouTube and all the comments getting angry.

So, you're saying that Coldplay has gotten better the more they've gone away from their original sound. So kinda like what most people are saying about Paramore these days? Okay then. Also, "Achilles and his gold", were you thinking of King Midas? The fact that he could touch anything and it'd turn to gold? Well it did backfire on him, so who knows.
