One Hit Wonderland: "Video Killed the Radio Star"

One Hit Wonderland: "Video Killed the Radio Star"

Brilliant. It's sometimes hard to know how big a band from long ago would have been, since so many songs have been lost to time, and it seems to be random which songs survive 20-40 years down the road. Who knows what current music our grandchildren will remember fondly?

Rish Outfield

This was wonderful.

oh shoot, I can't believe I missed this episode!

I am a little dissapointed that you only thought of video killing the radio star in regards to music. It is deeper than that. radio had news programs, talk shows, and stories (War of the worlds was a radio drama that people thought was a news story and some freaked out and killed themselves). Radio news anchors and "actors" careers literally were killed by video (tv). If you were voicing a black person, or an athlete, or a ladies man on the radio but you were an overweight slob you couldn't get those same roles on video (tv). Same for news anchors. Music is actually the area of radio most likely least affected by the emergence of TV.

Okay, I have no idea why you guys didn't get an email. Contacting Patreon about this now.

Todd in the Shadows

I didn't either, actually, I've always gotten an email before, but this one I only knew because I saw Todd's tweet.

i didn't know this was out till it hit youtube :/

I loved this episode. I had NO IDEA how much music the Buggles had a hand in!

Extra weirdness: Soundtrack composer (Crimson Tide, Sherlock Holmes, The Dark Knight, etc.) Hans Zimmer is in VKTRS video! He's the guy playing keyboards in the back surrounded by towers of amplifiers.

Okay, this is really strange - I never got a notification for this upload from Patreon.

Kalin

...THAT'S A BAD MISTAKE. Correcting now.

Todd in the Shadows

Hey Todd. Happy to see this video up as I'm a huge Buggles fan, but you have one error to correct. Asia did not have any members from ELO, it had a member from Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (elp) which is what I think you meant to say

This is probably the weirdies one -hit wonderland yet. The guys that predicted the future also had an active role in producing it too? There has to be a word for that! Also Todd , what do you think about the homage single "The internet killed the video star" by the Limousines?

Huh cool. I always just assumed this song was a big hit from a band that didn't always sound like that. Makes it way more interesting!

Seeing this comment, I am REALLY looking forward to Todd covering the "Trevor Horn had fingers in every-goddamned-thing ever" portion of the Buggles's story.

This is everything I could ever hope for from a One Hit Wonderland video: A song I am familiar with and a cool story about it's past, present and future. I've been sick for most of this week, and I can honestly say that this video made my day

TATU?... but... how? Did he produce the original Russian song or just the English lyric version? (I could look this up on Russian wikipedia, I'm just busy being mind-boggled.) I don't think I've even ever listened to the English version all the way through. Just the chorus bit sounds so... tame? I guess is the word compared to the big faux-lesbian "provocation" that the original was supposed to be. Sorry, I know this video isn't about TATU.
