ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "Beds Are Burning" by Midnight Oil

ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "Beds Are Burning" by Midnight Oil

Would you ever consider doing a one hit wonderland on too shy by kajagoogoo? then you can talk about the lead singers one hit wonder the neverending story song too.

True story: my mom and Peter Garrett were pen pals, many years ago. She was kind of obsessed with Australia, back in the 90's, and she vicariously turned me on to their music and aboriginal culture. I think she had a bit of a crush on Mr. Garrett, and I don't blame her. As a young boy, I really admired how he lived (lives?) his activism. That, and M.O. are just a kick-ass and underrated (State-side, at least) band. For fresh Australian sounds, I recommend Hiatus Kaiyote. Cheers from Washington.

wait, midnight oil are ohw in the States.

Christopher Buzza

Midnight Oil are a bitchin' band. I saw Peter Garrett give a talk at this year's Auckland Writers' Festival and he was great.

The main thing I know about World Party is that Karl Wallinger worked with Guy Chambers, who would later write songs for Robbie Williams. RW would also cover one of World Party's songs (She's The One).

Maybe it's my age or location but between MTV and CIMX I pretty much know all of these by heart. I was always considered weird because I preferred Midnight Oil to U2. Also I adore World Party's "Ship of Fools" but I suddenly understand why people look at me weird when I try to reference things like School of Fish or World Party.

Thank you for your awesome requests! Friends of mine featured "I Love You Always Forever" as their wedding dance song, and my knowing "entirely too much" about it helped me to enjoy it all that much more.

Oh man I definitely grew up listening to this band because my dad was a huge fan. Thanks for covering this song!

Errrbody in the cluub gettin tipsy.

As someone who fell in love with the Australian alternative scene when I studied abroad there, I highly recommend the Triple J radio station. They have an online stream at http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/

Can't wait for the next request run. Will definitely get mine in then things will be Madness.

This song makes me feel very, very Australian. I was whispering 'oi, oi' after the intro riff because that's what you do when it comes on at your mate's 21st.

Always love seeing Australian bands on here, great episode!

Matt Ryan

As an Aussie, I can confirm the popularity of 'the oils'. I've been hearing all their local hits since birth and I can super recommend them to everyone. You mentioned the Hoodoo Guru's, you guys need to listen to 'what's my scene'. Also check out Paul Kelly, he's basically and Australian Bob Dylan but less pretentious.

Hey, both this and Blue Sky Mine are still rock radio staples where I'm from, and I'm very much in the Northern Hemisphere. That being said, I had no idea they were about what they're about...

Robert Baczkowski

It's strange, I used to hear almost all of those Midnight Oil songs on the radio during my youth. But yes, I suppose Nirvana did sweep it all under the rug. And then set fire to the rug.

Rish Outfield

Wow, you have been on fire recently todd. It's super appreciated!

Jack Phillips

YES! I fucking love this song and I'd hoped you'd cover it someday!

Tony Goldmark

Great OHW about a great band!

Jacob Alys Rudolph

Keeping my fingers crossed for "Jump Around" or "Tainted Love."

Midnight Oil's "Forgotten Years" is definitely an underrated gem. That said, I'm going to keep my eyes out for the next set of requests to go on sale. I requested the platonic ideal of a motivational song ("Man in Motion (St. Elmo's Fire)") when I started my new job and the platonic ideal of a romantic song ("I Love You Always Forever") when my wife died. I can't wait to find out what platonic ideal of a song I'll pay entirely too much for next time.

Michael Russell

I'd like to see a OHW on J-Kwon, Tipsy has to be the worst party song i've ever heard in my life, no clue how that song didn't end up on Todd's worst of 2004 list, that should've been on there instead of "Why?".

LifeIsStrange

Don't Forget to Do a OHW On C&C Music Factory!!!

Michael Jones Jr.
