Pretty much what these guys said. A more concentrated stream of bullets means more bullets will hit the target.

@BrianGordon the spread rhythm increases damage since the enemies can only take one damage per frame. The pattern changes when the bullets hit so you'll get more hits per second rather than having 5 hits on all the same frame. the 5 hits all at once only counts as 1 point of damage.

I think it's that a full spread is wider than most enemies. A collimated stream of single bullets will result in more hits. #NeverPlayedContra

I don't really understand how spread rhythm increases damage per second if there are still only 10 bullets on screen at any given time. Do bosses get iframes on hit that make groups of bullets less effective?
