I got into chess after the queen's gambit and had a really good time but ultimately I've moved onto Go. It's an interesting foil to many of the things you've been talking about! The engines have been slower to solve Go although they are definitely there now. In my experience in the US it has a slightly less commercialized and more welcoming culture BECAUSE it's less popular in English speaking countries so people have to really cultivate new players. Ever since the first time I went to my local club more senior players have enthusiastically offered me free coaching. This is also helped by the fact that handicaps are a fundamental part of the system so it's easy for people with vast skill gaps to play each other and have interesting games.
