Cutting Room Floor: Everyone's Cheating at Chess (Allegedly)

Here it is! This is the stuff that ended up on the cutting room floor for the chess cheating video. 30 minutes of stuff that didn't make the final cut, including why India suddenly has 85 grandmasters, what actually happened with Anna Rudolf in 2007, the phone-in-toilet cases I didn't have room for, FIDE's ongoing institutional meltdowns, and some thoughts on how I decide what's fair game when covering real people. Hope you enjoy!

I got into chess after the queen's gambit and had a really good time but ultimately I've moved onto Go. It's an interesting foil to many of the things you've been talking about! The engines have been slower to solve Go although they are definitely there now. In my experience in the US it has a slightly less commercialized and more welcoming culture BECAUSE it's less popular in English speaking countries so people have to really cultivate new players. Ever since the first time I went to my local club more senior players have enthusiastically offered me free coaching. This is also helped by the fact that handicaps are a fundamental part of the system so it's easy for people with vast skill gaps to play each other and have interesting games.

This was good fun! I loved hearing about the stuff that got cut, there's always sacrifices that need to be made for clarity and pacing, but it's great to hear about interesting things that you chose to leave out. Really enjoyed!
