NEW VIDEO: Fandom's Biggest Controversy: The Story of Proshippers vs Antis

Hi everyone,

This one was definitely A Lot to make and write, but I'm pretty satisfied with it and I hope everyone else is too. While we were working on it, Emily described it as a "season finale" for the past year or so of videos, and I think just based on the themes of it, that that's pretty accurate. I hope everyone enjoys.

(I was having some glitching putting the credits together for this, so if your payment has processed but your name isn't in the credits for some reason, please let me know and I'll make note of it for next month's!)

NEW VIDEO: Fandom's Biggest Controversy: The Story of Proshippers vs Antis

I subbed to this patreon because of this video. As a 30+ year old person, I need people like sz to help me understand what in the fuck is happening on the internet anymore.

After learning about the rainbow meat emojis in your video, I feel like I've tuned into a forbidden frequency and see it popping up in twitter replies left and right. I suddenly feel like I know too much about these occasional internet strangers. More importantly, phenomenal video. You did a great job breaking the subject down for someone without much fandom awareness. I'm sorry the topic overlapped with awfulness you had to endure.

I gotta say, as someone who's been active in fandom for maybe 15ish years now-- and in some very often maligned fandoms, at that-- these types of videos always make me nervous. But you (and Emily!) always bring such nuance and empathy to these topics, and you really knocked it out of the park with this one. I've seen so much #discourse about the state of fandom and social media, and this is by far one of the best pieces out there. So glad I became a patron, and thank you for all the excellent work! <3

Is that ableist? That seems like a stretch... I mean, I'm abled, but I get a tax refund from the federal government, so I'm technically not paying taxes, I'm being paid. Whereas anyone with a YouTube channel will ABSOLUTELY have to pay wildly high taxes, abled or not. That seems more a comment on the system and how it works than anything to do with someone's disability (or lack thereof).

I want to know how you did your nails because I love them and want to steal that look

You are braver than every marine lol

I know everyone else is focused on whether or not you're ableist for describing yourself as "tax paying" but I just wanted to say your makeup looks really good in this video and I have noticed ๐Ÿงก

FOMO? YAGNI!

Saw a while back Sarah had deleted twitter and wondered why and now it's oooooOOOOOHHHH! Great video, fun fit, and I am glad that Sarah has taken it on herself to dismiss all FOMO from every topic she covers. Truly a personal sacrifice for the betterment of the world.

Dramatic stories about dramatic stories and the dramatic authors who wrote them. Ever read the soap opera magazines at the grocery store checkout? They're full of cover-to-cover with drama, mostly about the soap opera stars. Today it would basically be RLFF. This whole tempest in the Twitterpot happened back in March. https://forums.penny-arcade.com/discussion/239806/its-not-me-its-youtube/p39 P.S. check out the Harris Bomberguy School on Writing Shorter Sentences.

People goto Twitter looking for a fight, and following loudmouths like Rowling is like having ringside seats to every Mike Tyson match. Social Media are seen as the salons of our age, where Important Ideas are exchanged between Thought Leaders. They are not. Instead, Social Media are Validation Casinos, where we pay in posts and get payouts in internet points, and are just as addictively gamified as slot machines. A few lucky individuals have managed to make a lot of money from this, and that's true for any casino - part of the marketing is that "it could be you" raking in jackpots and/or going viral. This amplifies certain opinions, as has been well documented, and definitely influences our thoughts and ideas. It's almost as though social media are training us to have less empathy foreach human, by using the simplistic dichotomy of "good" vs "bad" to amplify the toxic opinions of a vocal minority, and mute healthy counterpoints & opinions as uninteresting or even "bad".

Yeah that twitter deactivation makes a lot of sense now. I barely understand this stuff (my knowledge basically only comes from your videos tbh) and the discourse still gives me a headache.

I constantly hear people on twitter complaining about pros and antis, and I barely understand what's going on and feel like a boomer. I'm excited for this video! I will finally understand!
