Strangers on Paper - DevLog #23

Hey everyone! You may (or may not) have noticed we’ve decided to pause our Patreon pledges for the time being. The issues we’ve been having with the hardware have taken progress from slowly moving on to hardly getting anything done, and so, after some back and forth, we both agreed it’d be for the best not to charge our patrons for the time being.

This does not mean we are stopping progress altogether, it just means that, while we greatly appreciate your support, (and because we d...

Before we get started, Gizmo is off this week, busy with moving stuff but would like to thank you all for your unexpectedly thorough knowledge on dealing with roaches and would like you to know the situation is under control now.

Going back to SOP,  I've encountered some setbacks with my GPU, resulting in black renders (and DAZ isn't the only program I'm having issues with, but also programs I use for my work).

For those who want to know, black r...

Before we get started, if you just happened to have joined our Discord server in the past few weeks… We’re sorry, okay? That must have been confusing to you. And, like, to everyone else in there.

But not really that sorry.

We’ve got a bunch of stuff to share with y’all and that was our way of, uhm, teasing you. You can take it as in “we are absolute marketing masterminds”<...

Hello there, long time no see!

Summer has been a bit of a fever dream, both metaphorically and literally. Our individual struggles during this period have seriously deteriorated our pace, but they’ve also made us realize we did use to have sort of a steady thing going on up u...

Strangers on Paper - DevLog #19 About Character Creation

MC’s backstory? Amy’s curves? Becca’s hair?! We’ve been teasing at this dev log for long enough and I’m currently going through a fever-induced writing frenzy so sit tight, ‘cause it’s gonna be a long one.

First of all, let’s get some things out of the way:

Strangers on Paper - DevLog #18

Did you know you can now add Strangers on Paper to your Steam Wishlist? Go!

It’s been a running joke between Grogu and I that we usually take turns in terms of wellbeing: I’ll get sick and step back from GGS for a bit while Grogu works some of his visual magic, and by the time I come back he’ll fall sick while I’ll continue to write up the next big thing. Just ...

Strangers on Paper - DevLog #17 | About Chapter 2

It’s actual announcement time! Woo!

We are very excited to let you all know Chapter 2 of Strangers in Paper will be available this coming September. And I’ll take this chance to remind you this will be the second of three (or maybe four) chapters. The story was always planned to last that long, there’s just some minor setbacks that may stretch it just a little bit (stubborn characters and shit).

We had initially considered August instead, and had been devoti...

DAZ and Visuals: A not-so-comprehensive guide

Disclaimer

Before we get started, I want to clarify that I'm not an expert with DAZ by no means, and to this day, I still hate it, but it's clearly mutual. Also, my current work revolves around cinematography, so some of the points I'm going to mention are things in which I already have certain acquired skills. This guide is specifically aimed at those who want to create their ...

A lazy morning for Becca

A little more of Becca here to remind you SOP is on Steam now and all additions to wishlists are very much welcome! We know you guys are already familiar with blue-haired Becca, which is why we have included that version of her here, but there's just something about Chapter 2's blonde Becca...

Strangers on Paper now on Steam!

We are VERY happy to announce Strangers on Paper will be released on Steam! If you are familiar with the platform, you may know wishlists are quite important to new games, so we'd really appreciate it if you were to add SOP to yours, and then ask your mom, your dog, and neighbors to do so too.

Hi, everyone!

We hope you’ve been doing well! We’d like to let you all know of things that are coming your way these upcoming weeks. We’ve been preparing some content we can’t wait to share with you, such as:

Strangers on Paper - DevLog #15 - Progress Update

This week it’ll be a month since the first early release of Strangers On Paper and, wow. We’ve gone from slowly figuring things out, to devoting every free minute of our days to it, to creating free minutes in our days, to thinking of nothing but it, to getting it out there, to being overwhelmed by everyone’s lovely response, to… going back to slowly figuring things out.

New Tier Announcement

So... When we set up the Childhood Crush tier almost two weeks ago, we did not expect you folks to jump on it the way you did. Therefore, we figured we might as well add something more intermediate for those of you who want to be more than Friends but are not quite there yet.

You may now pledge as a "Friend with Benefits" and get some exclusive...

Strangers On Paper - DevLog #14 - FAQ

Upon releasing Chapter 1 of Strangers on Paper, we have collected some questions we’ve seen pop up in different places and thought we could answer them all in one post for your convenience.

  • What kind of sexual content are you planning to include in this game?
Let’s get this out of the way first. SOP is not a story about sex. It is a story with se...

To say these have been some busy weeks would be quite the understatement. I don’t even know how to write a dev log anymore. I mean, right now we should be taking a break. We said we would do so after the release. Wait two or three days and take at least a week or something off.

So why did I just spend the whole day writing and why is Grogu already working on the new scenes?

I think I’ll use this one to sort of journal our thoughts and feelings through this, since the answer to...

New Tier Announcement

We have now added a very special reward for those who want to go the extra mile.

This is something we've been wanting to do for a while since we're big suckers for tangible goods, so here it goes.

By pledging as a "Childhood Crush", you will get all rewards from the other tiers plus a printed instax of a render of your choice by month. This tier is currently limited to on...

Strangers On Paper - Devlog #12: An Interview

About a month ago I had this idea that, whenever we felt the game was "done" we should interview each other about the process of it. And... I guess that day is here. We may have snuck in a little announcement in it.

Gizmo: HEY. Wanna do the interview thing we talked about? I didn’t sleep shit so I’m readier than ever.

This is our last log in April, which means next month SOP comes out which means... wait, what?!

Since the last few logs have been pretty text-heavy, we figured this one could be just render-heavy to give your eyes some well-deserved rest. As we reach the finish line, we're trying our best to make sure everything is just as we want it to be - this means me editing and re-editing stuff...

DevLog #10 The Writing Process

I often joke about having “too many hobbies”. There’s a lot of things I enjoy doing, yet there’s not enough time in the world to dedicate myself to just one. Yet, if I had to choose, it would ultimately be writing. The kind of exhilarating feelings I get when I read or write are something else. Writing has been my companion, my therapist, my best friend, my worst enemy, my soulmate. I could write love songs and give infinite boxes of the best Swiss chocolate to writi...

Strangers On Paper - DevLog #9: About Inspiration

Grogu: Many times in our no-meetings we have talked about how we’d like SOP to be perceived, and we both agree that we feel like some indie movie directors entering a movie festival for the first time (?)

I remember when we talked about the first few scenes, or when I would ask Gizmo to tell me a bit about the idea she already had in mind so I could see how t...

Behind the scenes #3: Building a scene

Gizmo: Every time I write a scene, I have an idea in my mind of what it would look like. Sometimes it’s a bit like remembering a dream - I sort of understand the surroundings the characters are in, though the color of the sky may keep changing and there’s some gaps here and there. Other times, I have very specific shots in mind, I could tell you exactly how many feet each character is standing from each other and how the light is hitting them and each and every reaction t...

Hey all, hope you're having a fantastic weekend. A few bumps have interrupted our production in the last few weeks, some of them were welcome, some were heartbreaking, but nonetheless we're pretty much where we were expecting to be by now. My own "interruptions" have mostly resulted in "you will be editing chapters on a bus at 3am instead of in the comfort of your home" or "you will be writing drunken rants that cannot stand as devlogs so you better keep those to yourself" s...

You know when you’re playing “A Plague Tale” and you just think to yourself, “Hey, let’s ditch everything and just create a post apocalyptic game”?

Don’t worry, it’s just an intrusive thought, it’ll go away soon along with “and that really nice thing your friend said, he was just being kind”.

So this week we did something we’d been sort of postponing since the beginning of this journey. No, not 2023-02-17 20:59:04 +0000 UTC View Post

Devlog #6 or a rant about adult content in video games and what that means for our game

One of our earliest discussions about how we would promote the visual novel was regarding the subject of tags. Ah, how I loathe that word. It made me cringe every time we brought up the subject. Sure, tags are important, but have you considered the different styles of cursors we could be using? Or changing the font from regular to bold? Now those are matters of uttermost urgency we should be devoting all of our energy and time to.

This week we thought we could treat you all with a little preview video of the menu... and then got a little carried away :)

We're still working on polishing some details but HELL is it rewarding to see it all come together like this. Bare in mind this is not the final version!

We hope you enjoy it! :)

This week, we got to test an updated version of the scenes that introduce the characters in Chapter 1.

And wow.

One of my favorite parts of this whole process is the moment I get to see the renders. For the most part of my life, I'd always dreamed of writing books. It was only in recent years that I started considering writing video games and then last year that a more concrete opportunit...

It’s been a rocky start of the year, to say the least. Health setbacks aside, we are finally back on track and have been hard at work on SOT.

Creatively speaking, this year has been amazing. There is so much we have learned and can't wait to share with the world. It's been a bumpy road for sure, but anything that's worth working on will pose a few challenges.

I think some of the main takeways from these past few months would be:

  • Don't be afraid to be ambitious, but also know when to stop overthinking things (spending a whole hour choosing and placing Becca's tattoos may have been a little bit too ...
