I have my concerns about the Martian legal system, and I'll admit up front that this intersects with my day job. Marcus Leopold has been my hero throughout, especially when he took on the role of James Madison and drafted the Constitution. But the system has some clear limitations. I didn't perceive any right to appeal. So all of these judges are making accurate factual findings in this thousand or so cases? And the legal conclusions across all of the judges are consistent with each other? And this process is credible enough to earn the faith of the people? Then I'm gathering that there's nothing like a protection against self-incrimination. Judges are directly interviewing defendants. It seems modeled on a continental system, with a three-judge panel, and I don't know if there's a right to remain silent in that system. Then most problematic is the absence of habeas corpus. People are detained, some of them clearly illegally, and they have no access to the courts. Whatever relief they get seems to be based on judicial whim. This seems like it has the makings of a whole new...revolution. Also, in a separate line of thought, please oh please tell us what happens to those poor people deported to Saturn's moons. Is it really possible we had a whole Navy sitting around with little to do, and no one thought to send a couple of carriers over to Saturn and bring those people back? Are they just out of luck?
