The doctor Phil stuff reminds me a lot of dr oz, it’s just someone who looks at a camera and tells viewers things they already believed or wanted to hear. Glad you’re tackling this stuff Joel, it’s a remarkable contrast between you and Phil.

Wait I’m sorry, how does this fundamentally change the advice from just “gain the tools to lose weight and lose weight” I might be confused here Like I’m a bit confused what the difference is between “develop mental toughness and fortitude that motivates you to do what needs to be done” and “find the strength inside yourself to do what needs to be done” if the former isn’t elaborated on in the least.

On the motivation part: I think that you and Dr. Phil just don't share a common vocabulary on motivation. I've heard his argument before ('motivation is fleeting, do it anyway' or whatever variation), and I've used it to my benefit. So, I think I can translate it in a way that might make more sense to you: 'If you want to accomplish this long term goal of losing weight, you're going to have to acquire a mental toughness that allows you to push past barriers consistently.' Framing it in terms of motivation, I think, comes from a lot of people comparing their current low-motivation state to a previous high-motivation state and concluding that they have no motivation. (But they do it anyway). I think that even a modest brush with low motivation (and doing it anyway) might lead a person to have this perspective. I don't think just saying what he said necessarily helps, since you have to understand what he means first. And, it's a fairly obvious tip, but it's much better than 'willpower is a lie. Find the willpower' or something like that.
