I wish every "nice guy" knew how frightening the nice guy trope is. How many "nice guys" become very, very not nice in an instant, how they may even become violent -- those possibilities all exist at the same time as the guy is being "nice".

I would argue that the School of Life's claim is actually opposite to what attachment theory would say, as attachment theory claims that having your emotional and physical needs met by parents as children contributes to having GOOD relationships. Pretty much any study you look at comparing secure attachments to insecure (like anxious-ambivalent, avoidant, etc) shows positive outcomes for securely attached people (in relationships, in mental health, in overall functioning, etc). So actually having your parents protect and meet your emotional needs, leads to better relationship outcomes as an adult. Of course, you could still feel sad and upset in relationships, but then it would not be related exclusively to attachment but to any number of other factors that contribute to complicated relationships. And like maybe it's just normal to be sad in relationships sometimes

Same, I got sucked in too. It doesn't help that the stuff on School of Life has some basis of fact. The first example Big Joel uses is based on John Bowlby's theory of attachment, for example, as are many of School of Life's videos. Psych2Go & SciShow Psych are good substitutes for the psychology side of things, & there's some good philosophy substitutes in the description of this other video critiquing the School of Life (https://youtu.be/T0uKnF_6E0Q), which actually got deleted due to a copyright strike filed by the School of Life - Big Joel, beware! The funniest thing about your review of this channel is that i until recently seriously just consumed the content this channel created. i was so entranced, i watched many many many videos. never even noticed there wasnt a single fact, didnt even consider questioning it. People who speak with conviction and authority just demolish my free thought, they absolutely shit on it and thats pretty funny to me. Jordan peterson speaks with the same level of command whenever hes doing his "life advice clean your bedroom" fuckaround, and i just listen. This is so vindicating because I saw this guy's Ted Talk about secular alternatives to churches and thought it was interesting, so I bought his book. I read, like, two chapters and then returned it the next day because it was highly specific nonsense that devolved into "dude I think your kinks are showing." (e.g. there should be places for communal eating... also we should bring back ancient holidays that were all about letting go of inhibitions... so maybe we could have orgies in the communal eating establishments, here is a mockup of what that would look like.)

I think you're a funny person, and I often get a chuckle out of your delivery, but I mainly watch your videos because they're thoughtful and insightful. That being said, this one had me wiping away tears from laughing so hard. Your recitation of that goober's stilted, sappy pillow talk was golden. Years ago I watched a few School of Life videos when I was trying to learn more about philosophy, and I found them to be substance-less ramblings with kitschy animation. Recently, I stumbled back upon the channel and was shocked to see that it'd not only gained a ton of new followers but also switched focus to dispensing vapid, absurdist "life advice". It's gratifying to hear you acknowledge how trash it is.

I've watched a few of their videos because with many Philosopher's they are the first major summary vids that pop up. But going through university, and even just watching their videos, it's often clear their understanding of many Philosophers is narrow. Even where its correct, its slanted by Alain de Botton's views. Also iirc once or twice he straight up implies certain thinkers were cultural Marxists where it's obviously a stretch.

Also isn't there some tension between one explanation being 'your adult experiences don't stack up compared to your idyllic childhood' and 'a dissatisfaction with your adolescence is an important driver of adult accomplishments'? Seems like the claims made in those two videos are pretty radically at odds with one another.
