I guess I'm saying that, if we're thinking in terms of the Founders' intentions, or even just logically, the Establishment Clause exists for the same reason laws against other kinds of acts by the government or individuals do: as a deterrent, yes, but also as a guideline to identify and deal with infractions. No one would ever have the expectation that a court could go back in time and unring the bell of a challenge to the separation of church and state, totally erasing all memory that it ever occurred. But by illegitimizing the authority of McCreary County to mount a religious display, the Supreme Court made it clear that the government as a whole abides by and enforces the Establishment Clause.
