I guess Subaru's attitude in these episodes get to people and they can't watch it 😭 it was painful to watch but I also felt sorry for him 😭

These two are the lowest point in the series. They are great, but definitely make people quit the show. The first two episodes are mid to weak, but that can be explained by being world and character introduction. These two are the hardest to watch, and due to their non-action oriented nature, annoy and anger people. It really sucks that people stop here a lot. Avoiding spoilers, the show is non-stop rising quality from here on until at some point where it plateaus for a bit before continuing to rise again.

Thank you for explaining how the gate and Od work! I didn't understand it very well when it was explained in the anime 😅 I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on these episodes too! I totally see all what you are saying about Emilia and Subaru, it's a difficult situation for Subaru and hopefully he learns from all this. it's really heart-breaking 😭

Keep in mind the cloak with the ears that Emilia is wearing, it will be explained why she would be wearing it a bit later in the show. So a bit more about mana and other stuff (from what I can understand): Od is a vessel for mana. Gate is something the mana goes in and out of for the use of magic. So if you think of it as a bottle, the Od is the bottle itself that holds the mana and Gate would be the neck of the bottle to let mana in and out of the bottle. I believe it was explained near the start of the show that people replenish mana like energy when they sleep (or I think that was implied because of how Puck said it before he disappeared in episode 1). Subaru's gate was exhausted when Puck tried teaching him magic (the big black explosion of smoke). It exploded because his Gate hasn't been used before, so the Gate was unable to control the amount of mana Subaru should've released. He then used Shamac (the magic he was taught) in the fight with the Mabeast boss (before Rozwaal came and saved him) which further exhausted his Gate, because he still lacks control. So now, with his Gate being overused due to his inability to control the amount of mana he releases, he needs treatment. He can still use it, like you can use a cracked bottle which hasn't broken yet, but who knows what might happen if he keeps using it. I think it makes sense for Emilia to be worried and anxious. Especially with what Puck said at the end of Memory Snow. She doesn't want Subaru involved in things, because like she said, she knows the moment she takes her eyes off of him, he goes and does something crazy, because that's true. Emilia here also says that Puck controls fire, but that's also another mistranslation. Truth is that Puck doesn't control fire or ice. Puck controls temperature. What I said in the comment under Memory Snow about Subaru acting immature really shows these two episodes. He instantly got jealous of Julius kissing Emilia's hand as a formality. Same happens as soon as he sees Emilia with Al, and even Al notices it and says "Looks like your buddy's got screw loose, little lady. He's more worried about losing you to another man than happy to see you". Even after that when Emilia asks him how he met her, he instantly jumps to thinking that she's jealous but we all knew, even without knowing how important or who she even is, that it's not what Emilia meant. The worst part is here how he wants to be included everything that has to do with Emilia, to the point where he can't even trust Emilia to handle her own business. Sure, we know that there could be people that might want to hurt her, but he's too clingy. I understand the feeling of him wanting to help, but there is a limit to everything. A point where wanting to help turns into self satisfaction and you end up not doing it for the other person, but to stroke your own ego, for yourself. It's arrogant and ugly, just like Subaru here. It's been long time coming and I hope this is finally a wake-up call for him to trust Emilia and to stop deluding himself that everything he's doing is for Emilia. Like Emilia says, how did the duel with Julius or him embarrassing himself in front of everyone, including the knights, benefit him? It didn't and he knows it. Everyone can see it, even the viewers, that what Subaru did was bad. It's just not something normal adults would do. He's the only one that doesn't see the fault in it, because he's so immature. Even if Emilia saved him in the past life or whatever he wants to bring up, it's all just an excuse. If I personally wanted to repay a debt to someone for saving me, I'd start with honoring my promises with them and trying to not intentionally go against their word just because I feel like I should be there to protect them always. It's just backwards logic. It's like Emilia said; there is another Emilia inside Subaru's mind, that is perfect, that can perfectly understand everything. We've been seeing this all this time, with Emilia Major Angel and other things that Subaru keeps saying. He imagines Emilia to be something she's not. She is not perfect, nobody is. All that being said, the exchange between them at the end there breaks my heart in so many ways. I can understand how Emilia feels because she doesn't understand why Subaru is going to these lengths so try and "pay her back". But I also understand Subaru, even if he mistakenly believes that he's doing it all for her. He just can't treat her like anyone else, not because she's a half-elf, but because he loves her. A truly sad situation and it's just made even worse because of the limitations of what he can talk about due to Return By Death. Like a wise christian priest once said: love is equality. Treating everyone the same is true love. Treating people differently because you think you love them is actually discrimination. I've never been very religious but I think there is some truth to that. There is also some skipped content in this episode, that is later revealed in a spin-off show, so most people don't know about this. If you want to know what it is, keep reading, if not, that's okay too. The skipped content was revealed during the carriage ride to the castle with Al and Priscilla, it was told to the readers that Al is also from japan like Subaru. It also explains why Al always also calls him "bro" or didn't question Subaru when he mentioned the Kansai dialect. Sorry for another long post, but this is one of the most important episodes of this season and in Subaru's character in general, so I feel like it's worth giving out my full thoughts on this.
