Weapon (pistol), very rare (requires attunement)
This pistol releases a superheated ember from its central furnace whenever it's fired, instead of a bullet; it creates its own ammunition and lacks the loading property. You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon, which deals fire damage instead of its normal type. In addition, while the pistol is on your person, you have resistance to fire damage.
The weapon's damage die depends on the heat of its furnace. When fully heated, it uses a d12 damage die. Hit or miss, after the weapon is fired, its damage die is reduced by one size (to a minimum of a d4). For example, if you fired the pistol three times on your turn, the first attack's damage die would be a d12, the second attack's would be a d10, and the third attack's would be a d8. The weapon's damage die increases again as its furnace reheats, up to a maximum of a d12. The die increases by two sizes at the start of each of your turns (or after 6 seconds), and one size whenever you take fire damage while holding the pistol.
If you make an attack roll with the pistol and roll a 20 on the die, each creature within 5 feet of the target of the attack also takes fire damage equal to the number rolled on the weapon's damage die.
Deep breath: air in the lungs, air in the chamber.
Two bursts of flame, two sharp exhales. Back into cover.
The dragonborn inhaled again for another volley, timing her breath to the weapon. This was not majestic dragonsbreath, no; not anything so gaudy or imprecise.
Two bursts, two exhales, cover again.
The furnace roared to her rhythm. She spun it in her clawed hand and felt the air woosh into and burn through its barrel.
One burst, one exhale, one devastating explosion…
Okay, that one was dragonsbreath.
Update May 27, 2025. Added fire resistance while it's on your person.
