Character Study of Goth Girl

Goth Girl was a character I made when I was heavily experimenting with the kind of content I wanted on the channel. By the time of her first video, seen her: https://youtu.be/rsMYI1xOj5c, I had already established that some characters on the channel would be reoccurring. I didn't have a set inspiration for her, but Goth Girls roleplays were trending across the ASMR sphere, so I wanted to make one too!

When I first started posting videos on youtube, a lot of the early vids were geared towards teaching myself basic editing, audio, and technical skills in general. For example, with the video game vids I taught myself how to use OBS, the basics of Adobe Premiere, and how to use a microphone! I'll be the first to admit the audio and editing is pretty darn rough in those first vids lol! But they were important to building a foundation of skills I would use later on!! Also, it's hard putting your work out there in front of others to see, and I wanted to get rid that fear early on.

The reason I mention all this was because the early Goth Girl vids really helped me to set in motion the course of where I wanted to take the channel! And it wasn't that they were super popular or anything like that, but there was something about that character that resonated with me, and I thought to myself, "I want this to be something."

So! When I decided to start doing greenscreen vids, I wanted Goth Girl to be one of my first ones! And I also had an idea that while I wasn't sure viewers would be into, I really liked.

What if Goth Girl started to mention other characters on the channel?

By the third green screen Goth Girl vid https://youtu.be/6NsH-BMtos4, I had already done a horror video called Lady In The Woods https://youtu.be/zXjQaDed00g , and a couple of Vampire videos. And I thought to myself, wouldn't it be crazy if Goth Girl knew about those events and addressed You, The POV, about it? Seems like a really simple concept, but that idea really hyped me up! So at the end of the third Green screen Goth Girl vid, I had Goth Girl call her sister, The Vampire Slayer, to meet The POV at the club they had been frequenting with the Vampire.

I should mention that originally The Slayer was not supposed to be the sister of Goth Girl. She was designed as a foil to The Vampire, with a Cat/Mouse Relationship. However, that started change when I put out "Nun Is Obsessed With You, Van Helsing" https://youtu.be/y5gpOPQ7QH4 .

I have to stress, I didn't make that video with the intention of it being a secret prequel or anything like that. I just really like Van Helsing lol. But as I made other videos with the POV that would eventually become "The Conduit", and as I started to put out more videos based on Van Helsing's adventures, things started to slide in place naturally.

I've always been "Character first, Story second" when it comes to developing roleplays, and often during filming, it feels less like I'm there and more that the character has taken my place and is the one to get things done. And as the two separate stories developed, I had a realization:

I'm not telling two stories. This is one big one.

I started to include little hints in the videos like The Slayer having The Nun's cross, but it became clear extremely fast that nobody was noticing lol.

So I had a little Sleepover event where I would lay it all out for the viewers. I wanted to firmly establish That Goth Girl and The Slayer were sisters, Van Helsing was their great-grandfather, and this is all the same timeline. I also included my favorite Lovely Little Witch, Valley Girl, to establish The Lovely Little Witch series was also included in this timeline.

And now, as you can see that all roads lead back to Goth Girl, let's talk about her again! When it comes to her personality, I've always wanted her to feel flexible. Her temperament is not the same in all videos. Sometimes she's really nice, other times she's moody. Occasionally, she can feel dangerous. She is a Helsing, after all.

And growing up Helsing, her and her sister have had a rough time. The Helsing's are world-renowned monster slayers, and movies based on them in our world, such as the Van Helsing movie or The Mummy, are made as biographies in their world. And although monsters are known to have ravaged the world in the past, supernatural activity has largely been quiet since, thanks to the efforts of The Van Helsing family.

And being a Helsing definitely comes with its challenges. Goth Girl and her sister aren't allowed normal lives, because they themselves are not normal. At birth, her and her sisters REAL names were given and hidden away, for Names have power, and a Helsing must always have the upper-hand against creatures of the night.

So, Goth Girl was simply called "Girl" (the Goth would come later, as she likes to say), and her sister was called "The Vampire Slayer."

Goth Girl and her sister had a mix of regular and home-schooling, so they were never really able to form solid connections with their peers. And while The Slayer always knew she would want to become head of the family, Goth Girl wasn't as sure what she wanted out of life, which caused her to look elsewhere for support. This led her, through her family's connections, to join The Lovely Little Witches as The Dark Witch.

And going back to her connections, it's hard to mention Goth Girl without also mentioning The Conduit. I see a lot of comments along the lines of "when are they getting together" or "when is the relationship moving forward," and I feel like there's a fundamental misunderstanding of what they mean to each other.

To Goth Girl, a character who's lived her entire life feeling like she's outside looking in at what she considers normal, to find somebody who both knows and accepts her as a Helsing, a Witch, and just a girl, is invaluable. To The Conduit, a character who's constantly being hounded by the Supernatural for reasons unknown, to find not just somebody, but an entire family who understands and can empathize with their struggles, is invaluable.

This is soulmate territory, people!!

Anyway, I hope this sheds a little more light on what Goth Girl as a character means to me and why her existence is so important!

See ya'll next week!!

Naw! I did a similar bio for The Slayer a couple of months ago, so I wanted to do Goth Girl too! Every now and then I’ll do these for characters!

All this lore makes me think we’re close to a singularity of some sort.

Thanks! I didn’t plan for this post to be as long as it ended up being, but I realized to explain goth girl is to explain the channel’s history lol! Looking forward to making cool things for y’all in the future!

It's really cool to see how much went into Goth Girl as a character and the story as a whole. Slayer quickly became one of my favorites. The characters in the story feel really fleshed out and relatable. Also, it's cool to see you talking about how you started. Going back to see where you were then to where you are now must feel awesome. I can't wait to see how your content evolves in both the technical and storytelling fronts. Keep it up! :D

Thanks! I look forward to making vids for y’all for a very long time!

Pretty insightful read, glad you let us into your thought process! Also got a little bit of lore on you about learning through your early vids, very impressive Wicket! I can tell how much your channel has grown and look forward to seeing it grow even more :)

There isn’t a direct inspiration, I more took the ASMR trope of a Goth Girl and ran with it! That being said, I really like Wednesday! And the early Goth Girl vids are very Wednesday-coded!

Although The Slayer has gone through changes relationship-wise, at her core I’ve always had a very strong vision of who that character is!

She definitely feels like the most fleshed out and "human" of your characters. The fact that she has an undefined name whereas her sister's role has apparently been so clearly defined is a clever point that explains a lot about both characters

I claim that Goth Girl is my favorite roleplay now, but she was the one I most hesitant to watch. I knew she was either a series I was unfamiliar with, or an OC of sorts. But I slowly cracked and gave her a chance. A chance that I do not regret. Does she have an inspiration of someone or something else? As far as Goth Girls go, I am sometimes reminded of Wednesday Addams.
