Canine Gods

Huehuecoyotl and Xolotl are two canine deities of Nahua pantheon. Huehuecoyotl is the coyote god of music, dance, mischief, and song. He is the patron of uninhibited sexuality, and related to Tezcatlipoca. Xolotl is the dog (xoloitzcuintli) god of twilight, fire, lightning, underworld and twins. He is closely related to Quetzalcoatl.

The attire is based on Codex Borbonicus, which was produced in the Valley of Mexico shortly after the conquest. Although a clearer portrayal of deities is present in the calendar part of the codex, I used the monthly ritual part to show the priests' godly attire. Nahua priests sometimes wore the deities' attire to impersonate them and took part in the ritual as ixptla (In this context means 'avatar' of the deity). However, in my drawing, they are shown as deities themselves!
