Crimson Noble

Nobleman holding a fan, Goguryeo, 6th century

Goguryeo (고구려, 37 BC~668 AD) was an ancient Korean kingdom. Along with Baekje and Silla, Goguryeo was one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. At its peak of power, Goguryeo conquered most of the Korean Peninsula and large parts of Manchuria, along with parts of Mongolia and modern-day Russia.

This drawing depicts a high-ranking nobleman from Goguryeo. It is primarily based on Goguryeo tomb murals. The gilded headdress is based on a mural from Gaemachong (개마총). According to “History of the Northern Dynasties (北史)," the highest dignitaries of Goguryeo wore headdresses made of purple silk (紫羅) and adorned with gold and silver. The golden earring is based on the one currently at the National Museum of Korea.

The diamond-patterned clothing is based on a mural from Jangcheon tomb No. 1 (장천 1호분). Ancient Korean clothing often included elaborate patterns such as polka-dots and stripes. The fan made of animal fur is based on a mural from Anak tomb No. 3 (안악 3호분). The building in the background is based on a mural from Anak tomb No. 2 (안악 2호분). The beams and lintels of the building are highly decorated with various designs, such as flowing clouds and lotus flowers.

Comments

I think the costumes of the Three Kingdoms in Korea are certainly colorful and cool. In your work, you usually see the costumes of Silla. Goguryeo is similar in cool ways.
