It’s so interesting to think that the last time I performed as a man in Drag I was at the Nashville Burlesque festival, in Nashville Tennessee, surrounded by friends and loved ones and insanely talented performers. These performers were performing Burlesque and Drag, and embracing creativity in whatever form it presents itself. There were so many tickets sold that we had to shut the doors, it was an incredible sold out show. People are consuming striptease, Burlesque and Drag in Tennessee. It’s heartbreaking to think that I cannot perform Drag in Nashville anymore, that would be illegal. Something I just did a short time ago would now be illegal… It blows my mind. What I find even more confusing about it is that as a nation, we consume so much Drag in our every day lives, on TV, in media, in the movies, here are just a few examples of that
Every Madea movie…
Mrs. Doubtfire 1993 by Chris Colombus
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), by Jim Sharman
Kinky Boots (2005), by Julian Jarrold
The Birdcage (1996), by Mike Nichols
Victor/Victoria (1982), by Blake Edwards
The Queen (1968), by Frank Simon
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), by Stephan Elliot
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995), by Beeban Kidron
Just to name a few…
We consume this Drag, we laugh at it, we feel with it, we cry with it, but somehow it’s not acceptable today in 2023. Art, culture, humanity cannot be erased despite their best efforts.
