Sometimes I think about the speech Mr. Rogers gave to Congress when he was trying to get funding for his show to stay on the air. It’s just a very sweet moment where someone fights very hard to advocate for children in a time when kids were to be seen and not heard. It’s not even that he gave a voice to the voiceless, but rather that he simply listened to those who were told what they said didn’t matter or that it was silly or frivolous. It’s really easy to speak for others and often we think we’re helping. But truly the best thing we can do is just quiet ourselves long enough to listen.
