While researching Lorraine, I came across this photo of a dancer named Melanie from the two o’clock lounge, Combat Zone Boston. That pose! It just stops you dead in your tracks, doesn’t it?!
Here’s a quote from her…
“20 minutes later I was on stage. I saw all these men, just lined up at the bar, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon and I was scared to death… Anyone who looks at it thinks it’s easy. When you step on stage, it feels like it’s huge, and you feel like you’re an aunt. The runway at the 2 o’clock is like the runway at the airport. Everyone’s looking at you, and you can’t even walk, let alone dance. It’s a weird feeling until you get used to it, and then you love it.”
This is her, Melanie, on that runway. It gives me chills everywhere to have the statement next to this photo. Thank you Roswell Angier for documenting this incredible, outrageous project called the combat zone.
Thank you Melanie for being part of that project.
I’m learning so much from your story.
