Thank you Madison Hurley for this beautiful photo of Delores Night modeling this 1975 pink pasties and G string set handmade by designer and dancer from the combat zone Boston, Lorraine Gail Smith.
Lorraine was featured dancer at the 2 o’clock lounge in the combat zone and also a beloved designer of Burlesque bikinis and lingerie. Lorraine Gail Smith was a Featured Dancer not only in the combat zone but she traveled throughout the country as well. Spending Time in Los Angeles dancing and appeared in two feature films while she was there.
Lorraine had several stage names including Lorraine Gail Smith, sweet Lorraine, Lorraine Smith and probably a few more names. I’ve re-search the archives of 1973-75 Burlesque in LA and cannot find any of these names anywhere but I do know that she performed in LA as a headline act, feature performer because as I read through A chat room about The combat zone in Boston, several dancers from LA mentioned purchasing hand made stage lingerie from her. We finally have an investigative journalist on our team for this project and cannot be more intrigued by the information we’re finding already. But for now I want to share some of Lorraine‘s beautiful costume work with you. You can tell so much about a person by the way they create. The detail she uses to create requires a tremendous amount of patience and a well trained seamstress’ eye. You can tell she took everything she did seriously. But the color does really speak to a romantic side of her personality as well. I find it very interesting that she chose to put mirrors on her G strings.
Of course I cannot speak for her, however, I do wonder if she might’ve been reflecting peoples adoration or judgment right back at them by intentionally and literally placing mirrors over her vagina. Or maybe she just liked the way it sparkles in the stage light? Either way it’s an honor to document these beautiful pieces that were lovingly designed by her own hands.
Do you suppose there’s any meaning to putting 15 round mirrors on the front of the G string, or do you think it was just how it randomly fit there in that pattern? For some reason this keeps rolling around my head.
