Stripping History: Coby Yee

My whole life I've known that hustling my ass off is the only way to get through. Honestly, work and keeping myself busy is how I keep myself sane a lot of the time. I learned that from my parents. My mom is still working full time even though I've told her a thousand times that she doesn't need to. I think we're like each other in that way, needing to keep busy to keep our minds occupied.

Coby Yee was one of the hardest working women in burlesque. She was a fashion designer, dancer, club owner, entrepreneur, mother, friend, and all around amazing human being. Her life is incredibly inspiring and shows that hard work and perseverance can lead to incredible things. Right now there is a beautiful exhibit dedicated to her at the Burlesque Hall of Fame until April 30th, 2022.

She was the daughter of two Cantonese immigrants who settled in Ohio, where

Coby was born.

I think work tends to replace therapy for a lot of people. Do you find this true for yourself? Do you find yourself wishing you could work less? More? Why?

I worked my ass off from when I was 16 until poor health forced me into early retirement at 62. I have also spent 40 years volunteering to work with the youth in my community. Keeping busy has definitely helped give me a sense of fulfillment and a feeling that I’ve made a difference in our youths lives.
