Hold on to your hat...pins. Clearly, I have a few hat pins. I've collected them over the years and gotten rid of a bunch along the way. This is what I have with me on the island, but I'm sure I have more in storage. I just love them so much. They're so beautiful and really easy to collect because they don't take up a lot of space. They're perfect for keeping a shawl or shirt or skirt closed in a way that's more fashionable than a safety pin. They're great on a lapel, too. But the absolute BEST thing about hat pins is that they were on the verge of extinction for a while because women, being the ever cunning creatures that they can be found a use for them as..... SELF-DEFENSE WEAPONS! The regulation of hatpins became a hot topic for a long while in the early 1900s because more and more people were being attacked with hatpins. Often, it was men who were on the receiving end of the prick of a hatpin. These little, sometimes not so little, pins were the best defense ladies had against non-consensual touching.
Here's an article from the Smithsonian that digs a little deeper into that history.
