Old San Juan

I don’t get to travel to San Juan often, but when I do it’s always magical. There’s something so comforting about being in such a historic place. It’s like you can feel the spirits passing through the streets. I get the same feeling when I’m in New Orleans, too. With Samhain just around the corner, for those that believe in and practice magic in that way, it’s signifies the time when the liminal space thins between the realms of the living and dead. It’s often thought of as the pagan new year, indicating the time when we go from the light, sunny portion of the year to the quiet, dark portion. It’s a time to harvest all of your sewn seeds from the year and take inventory both of your actual crops and of what you accomplished. I love learning about the different magical celebrations used across cultures. What do you celebrate this time of year? How do you honor the lives of your loved ones who are gone?

I just got a copy of “Trick or Treat: A History of Halloween” by Lisa Morton and shared with me by Jeremy. (You’re BOTH bad influences in the best possible way.) 🥰 I’m going to try getting through it by the time Sunday rolls around. Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday. In part because it means my birthday is right around the corner, but also because I just like spooky shit. But… I just haven’t been “feeling it” the last few years. I used to set a life-sized Pinhead in one of the upstairs front windows with strobe lights, but he’s been exiled to the downstairs along with a “burning witch” and Jack Skellington (who I’m assuming to also be life-sized). I didn’t hand out candy last year and don’t plan to this year, so I’m hoping for a relatively quiet evening.

I didn't know the last part about violating the taboos. Very interesting!

That's beautiful. I completely agree. The signs are there, but people aren't always paying attention.

Yes, Samhain is a Celtic holiday of the end of the harvest and there are indeed interesting facts about this holiday, such as that this holiday was sometimes called the holiday of the dead. It was celebrated on the night of October 31 to November 1, and it was believed that people who violated their taboos die on this night.

Danielle, you look as magical and beautiful as the spirits that are with us, not only at this time of year but always. I've always believed that the essence that makes us who we are does not end with the death of our bodies. Even more so now that I am getting older and learning that yes, our loved ones who have passed before us are there to talk with any time we would like. Sometimes they actually listen and send us signs. It is indeed magical and beautiful.

Yes, I feel this💗

Thanks for loving our island. There is so much fear and misconceptions about paganism. I am a Espiritista (Spiritualist) and learned to respect all beliefs and learn about then in an unbiased way. That way I was able to understand and create my personal style of worship life and creation. Blessed Be
