Adams And Wabash

I've seen this photo before. It's super cool. This is a colorized version of the photo, taken at Adams and Wabash in Chicago (1907). It's so crazy to see how much HASN'T changed since this photo was taken. I look at this and it looks so distinctly Chicago to me. This intersection is about 1.8 miles away from where the Everleigh Club was while it was open. If you don't know about the Everleigh Club or the sisters who owned it, you should! They really set the precedent for Madames and brothels.
The club was open from 1900 until 1911, so this would have been during its heyday. If you walk straight down Wabash Avenue from this corner to the South for a little less than two miles, you would be right by the Everleigh Club. That might have been where some of these guys were headed! 😉
One thing I hadn't noticed until today was the sign in the corner that says Colby's Furniture! I wonder if there's any connection...
I'll check it out. In regard to scents, I doubt they were very pleasant with all those horses around.

It's not necessary for you to research this. I was only curious. You confirmed that the filming was done somewhere under the el. That's good enough for me since I have never been to Chicago anyway. Thanks for responding sweetie.

Looks like photobombing dates back to 1907! 🤪

I'm not sure if it was this exact intersection. I think a lot of the time when they do filming under the el it takes place on Lake Street but I'm not 100% sure. I'll have to look into it!

In the meantime… Time to make use of our imaginations.
“In the Gold Room the furniture was encrusted with gilt; in the Copper Room the walls were paneled with hammered brass; in the Blue Room everything was collegiate, with pennants and pillows of blue leather ornamented with pictures of Gibson girls; in the Moorish Room was the inevitable Turkish corner with its voluptuous couches and draperies; in the Japanese Room was a heavily carved teak-wood chair resting upon a dais, the whole covered by a canopy of yellow silk. The Tribune once said that the Japanese Room was ‘a harlot’s dream of what a Japanese palace might look like inside.’”

I recently saw a colorized video of people walking along a street in New York around the same time that this photo was taken. It's so moving. It really brings the humanity to history to be able to see these people with our own eyes.

It's one of the reasons I love Chicago so much. The architecture is so beautiful. A lot of the buildings still look like this.

There's a really great segment on the TED talk hour on NPR about a scent historian named Car Verbeek. Definitely worth a listen! I think involving all our senses when we can help us to create a more complete picture.

I just love history in general, but certain photos elicit such emotion and interest.

Danielle, the information you share from your research is very interesting. I love the older, nostalgic stuff, especially the beautiful architecture of yesteryear. Great photo and story to go with it.

No buses, trucks, cars. You can almost hear the clacking of the horses and the murmur of all those people talking. When I see these old pics I always imagine the sound along with the visual.

I was hoping to find some colorized photos of the interior of the Everleigh Club, but no such luck. ☹️ If you run across any, would you please post them? 🖤

Good morning Dannie! Isn’t that where one of the car chase scenes in the Blues Brothers was shot? Other movies too? Thanks for sharing sweetie. Have a great day.👛🚔🚔
