Jeromes Naked i 👁

Jeromes naked I was a strip club in the combat zone that started out as Jeromes lounge, a nightclub where musicians would come and play and people would dance and have fun, in time it turned into a Jeromes naked i, a burlesque club and later on a full on the Naked i, a strip club where some of the girls would turn tricks, what about 80% did not. Here’s a great quote from Roswell Angier‘s “A kind of life, conversations in the Combat Zone”.

“Of the girls I’ve dealt with, I would say that not more than 20% turn tricks on any kind of regular basis. Your contact in the clubs is going to be bartenders, so in theory I should know pretty much what’s going on. If a girl‘s hooking and she doesn’t tell the bartenders, she’s in trouble. Because how is she going to know who’s looking and who’s not? We can screen the customers for them if some John comes in and says he’s looking for a piece of ass. But I wouldn’t wager that more than 20% of the girls I’ve worked with are hooking. And a lot of them have never turned a trick in their lives. Maybe they’re not telling me, but I doubt it.”

Bartender at Jeromes lounge

That’s a cute little sentiment that seems supportive enough but I guarantee you that bartender is taking a percentage if he is screening the John’s. Something tells me that there were certainly girls that were hooking and didn’t wanna pay the bartender that percentage. You have to remember in 1975 feminism was a thing. A lot of women did not want to be controlled by a man or have to give her money to a man. Even in the combat zone.

This is something I’m actively researching. I’ve been spending a lot of my time contacting proprietors, bartenders, burlesque artists and strippers and yes even hookers from the combat zone to try to understand exactly how the industry worked at that time. Something that I found out is that strippers did not get tipped back then. For instance, at Jeromes, the strippers would have sidled up to the Patrons off stage and try to get them to buy rounds of drinks. At that time the strippers were tipped out by the bartenders according to how much liquor they could sell by the end of the night. It was not customary for patrons to tip the girls or stick money in their G strings at that time.

It’s always interesting to me how things change over time.

I’m sure some of you out there we’re in the Strip clubs in the 1970s. I would love to hear your insight on the matter. I was born in 1975 so I have no personal perspective on this.

Well, we're talking about the period between 1975 and probably 1982. I visited a few clubs in the day, but I had two favorites. One was The Bunny Club in Newark, NJ. The other was a club called Dirty Jack's in Montville, NJ. Interestingly, Dirty Jack's had been the club's name for years. Then a new owner tried to make it more family friendly and gave it a much more generic name, but everybody still called it Dirty Jack's. I'll try to remember the "official name"... Town Tavern comes to mind, but I'm not certain...

Danielle, you are most welcome! By the way, the first totally nude striptease I saw was in a strip club in Tijuana, Mexico. The strippers really worked dirty but I'll let you use your imagination what they did after they took off everything. When I was in London, UK patronizing their strip clubs in June 1966 when the strippers went all the way nude, they had to stand perfectly still for the curtain to close. You and yours stay well, and stay safe!

Great Info on tipping! What years were you frequenting clubs and if you are so inclined, what clubs and where? I’m trying to go back through history and document every strip club that has ever existed whether it is still in business or defunct. It’s a huge undertaking but I’ve never seen a comprehensive list of every strip club in the United States starting in the year 1970.

Back then, I only read Playboy for the articles and I only went into the clubs for the stimulating, intellectual conversation... 🙄 But seriously, there were a couple of clubs I frequented and the strippers were all local girls. All the club patrons had our favorites and we greeted them just like the bartenders when we came in. If a stranger came into the club and tried to give any of the girls a hard time, the bouncer seldom got involved because the patrons would have emphatically shown the guy the door. We protected "our" girls. And we did tip the dancers back then... but we would hand the dancer the tips and she would tuck them into her costume herself - no touching! It was titillating... but kinda innocent at the same time....

In California, I saw the advent of topless dancing starting at the old Hollywood Burlesque Theater in San Diego, CA in 1960 and running through 1970 when it closed for good. Topless dancing in the strip clubs started in 1966 at The Condor Club in San Francisco featuring the late Carol Doda and ultimately spread throughout California where in Pasadena, I first saw it in 1967 which was the same year I saw my first live nude striptease with Sally Rand performing her famous Fan Dance while completely but tastefully nude at the age of 65 and still with a beautiful face and body. In late-1968, totally nude or "bottomless" became legal on the condition of adherence to California's lewd-conduct laws which were and are now strictly enforced. Patrons are not allowed to touch the strippers in any way while they are performing which also means that they cannot stick money into the strippers' G-strings. However, patrons can throw all the money they want to onto the stage for the strippers to pick up after they finish their acts. There have been prostitution issues in some of the strip clubs but they are usually quickly resolved. Also, the nude strip clubs in California cannot serve alcoholic beverages of any kind; only the topless-only strip clubs can do that. Some strip clubs throughout California are dirty and poorly maintained and today, nearly all of the strip clubs are closed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic but thanks to the distribution of the vaccine, businesses are starting to re-open albeit slowly to ease back into normal life which could take at least a year. There, Danielle, you have my take on the advent of strip clubs in California. I was a regular patron of the strip clubs from 1967 to 1976 when I got married, patronized them less frequently, and settled down. I haven't been to a strip club since 2008 in that I am crippled and awaiting major surgery. Striptease is right up my alley and I sure do miss seeing it in person. I've been a widower now for 8 years and I am currently unattached and free and when I'm well, I'll be making up for the lost time in the strip clubs and the strip theaters.
