I came across this photo of Sugar’n Spice not too long ago and had to purchase it. The beauty of the feathers and her inviting smile were just perfect. I have sent this photo to my friend Nox Falls in Seattle. She’s an incredible burlesque performer and focuses specifically on Black burlesque history.
I send many of my pieces of Black burlesque history to her because of her vast knowledge. I’m learning in my anti racism education that this important history is best kept in the hands of Black burlesque historians like Nox. She has access to so many more resources than I do on this incredible topic within her burly family and history.
Historically burlesque has been systematically oppressive to Black and brown performers and it is known that oppressive BIPOC LGBTQ history should not live in the hands of the oppressors.
Nox is doing work much the same as myself as a striptease historian. I’m really excited to see what her research turns up on this photograph specifically.
As she documents, I will be amplifying her posts to stripping history so that we can learn more about Black burlesque history together from a credible source on the vast subject. 🎉
