In researching and brown and black performers of the past within pinup, Burlesque and striptease I’ve realized through the years that there is little easy to find documentation comparatively.
You really have to do your homework.
I found a really great resource in Ebony magazine. These are just a couple great little lingerie ads that I thought were cute. They are Fredericks of Hollywood ads in Ebony magazine.
The descriptions and prices always make me giggle when I’m looking at vintage lingerie ads. I love looking through them because they put together the puzzle pieces of history for me. When I can clearly see what items cost and how they are marketed I get a better idea of that time in history. It’s all the little details that are helpful in better understanding history.
I have been collecting Fredericks of Hollywood vintage pieces magazines, books, a firmer for years now and hopes to incorporate them into stripping history. I was delighted when I came across these ads and purchased them for the museum immediately. Wouldn’t it be incredible if I could come across the garments featured in these ads? I’m gonna do my best!
