I love wings! All wings, any kind of wings, I love wings! I’ve always wished I could dream of flying yet it’s only on rare occasion that I do (I usually dream about water which is super cool too) So when I have a chance to play with silky wings, my heart goes a flutter. If you are just starting out in Burlesque, it is a simple and fairly inexpensive way to make a costume and a routine stand out. You can usually find a beautiful set of wings or scarves or large silk fabric for around or under $100 depending on where you’re looking, they can run much higher than that but normally, you can find something beautiful for under $100. The benefit of having this flowing fabric in your routine is that it can help us dance more gracefully.
Mimicking the movement of the fabric, indulging in stillness, allowing the fabric to do a lot of the work. I like this for beginning Burlesquers or drag performances because it does help teach the art of stillness and the patience required allows you to drink in moments with your audience when you both are enamored with the movement of the silk. It truly is a form of art.
You have to be patient with yourself, the elements, the air, the fabric, all of it. The movement builds interesting opportunities for creative improv as well. It’s actually a very zen experience.
