I always took it as, they don't want everyone looking for the island because it's such a special place: a magical island that cures cancer, etc. It would be exploited if it were ever discovered. But yeah, similar to the later seasons of GoT, there are plot points in Lost that don't always make complete sense and they seem to be doing it for the drama of it all rather than for logic.
