The "smart" zombies are actually in the game. They are called Stalkers. It was really cool to see them shown off in the show for the first time. Stalkers were actually in the first game as well, but only a few times, and they weren't that different to regular runners so most people didn't even realize they were Stalkers. In the second game they adjusted the ai to make them much more dangerous and clever. They behave much like the Stalker in this episode.

Seems really promising so far, and it looks like they are again back to what they did with season 1 where they stick very close to the original for important scenes (the whole dance scene is basically 1:1 ported over from the second game) but are willing to do stuff a bit more freeform around it!
Kinda intrested in what they'll do with the "smart zombies" and sewer growth angles, which I'm pretty sure weren't in the games, but that might be the shows way of making the Infected more interesting since they cut some other stuff like the infectious spore clouds from the games.
However, in regards to the origin of the outbreak we do know from early season 1 that in the show version of the world the outbreak started with a fungus in a factory working with grains, and both the show and the game versions are based off of the "Cordyceps" group of fungi - which is a group that has a lot of species within it that grow on insects and keep growing until they've reached the inects brain, upon which they make the insect exhibit a certain behaviour (usually just to climb above a trail used by other insects of their kind and stay there while the fungus rains its spores down on new hosts).
