When Angel asked Wes if the gun would kill Illyria, there was a slight pause before he said yes. Later we learn that he was lying. I believe that the pause was Wes deciding how he should answer Angel's question. By lying and getting Angel's consent to use the gun, he would be able to do what he actually intended, drawing Illyria's destructive power out of her.
