i hate them so much

Buffy 6x13 - full reaction

I have always truly hated Warren. The other two I vary on like the rest of the characters who do awful things but also are good characters (Jonathan why?). But Warren? There's actual real hate for him.

your reaction to the trio here is the same one i have whenever i do a rewatch and get to ep4 of this season. the first 3 episodes are so good and then i'm reminded of the villains.

I want to say again how much I appreciate your objectivity when it comes to Spike and Buffy. I have never really understood the appeal of them as a couple, least of all to the extent and passion that many of those shippers have. The idea one of the other commenters made that Buffy was fantasizing about Spike in some of these scenes is interesting, but I don't think was what the show was going for. There's a clear parallel between Spike's dynamic with Buffy and what's going on with Warren and Katrina and the mentality of the three idiots overall. Spike's been gaslighting her, enforcing this idea that she's come back "wrong" and he's the only one who can understand her or that she can turn to. Now the whole thing on the balcony and telling her to keep her eyes open is designed entirely to deepen her sense of shame, while further making her feel isolated from her friends. And it's working. A common refrain in this episode is how unavailable Buffy's been; and besides work, Spike really is preoccupying a great deal of her time. He's manipulating her just as effectively, if not more so, as Warren and the others were with Katrina with them using magic. And there's an depressing irony here, or at least I think it's ironic, that there is such a strong fanbase for Buffy and Spike; and even where some will at least acknowledge how toxic it is and how "in real life they'd never condone it" it's sort of the core problem when it comes to Warren, Jonathan and Andrew; because they too are enacting this disturbing, toxic fantasy; and they don't see it for what it is until it's pointed out, because in their minds - or at least in Andrew and Jonathan's minds - it's this harmless game like they've seen played out in fiction. Yet there has been this contradiction with some viewers who will in one instance recognize and decry the Trio for what they're doing, and on the other cheer Spike and Buffy on - maybe acknowledging that it's toxic, but not really caring; or even leaning into the idea that this is somehow mostly Buffy's fault and that she's actually the one mistreating Spike, or that because they're both using each other, it makes it alright. It's just dissonant.
