This episode is so hard to watch. Dawn's reaction and Anya's reaction get me every single time without fail. The lack of music in the background makes everything so stark and visceral. The fact that they chose to let you hear Dawn screaming through the glass rather than right in the hallway with them was severe. The whole class heard her. Her bully was standing right there in the hall listening. I have so many feelings about Dawn lol Michelle Trachtenberg played her so well.

2023-10-26 23:29:06 +0000 UTCIn the last scene when a grief weakened Buffy is fighting the vamp the scariest thing in the room for Dawn is still Joyce's body. I imagine when Dawn puts her hand towards Joyce, it's to finally close her damned eyes.

2022-08-15 14:40:41 +0000 UTCOn the DVD commentary Joss Whedon says the flashback Christmas meal scene was done partly as a reminder of happier times and partly because he didn’t want the screen cluttered with credits while Buffy was trying to revive Joyce. It also gave me the impression that Joyce and Giles were like surrogate parents for the whole gang because their actual parents were absent (Anya and Tara), emotionally distant (Willow) or, uh, problematic (Xander).
