Winter 2025 update from Pleistocene Park

Hi all!

This year winter been quiet cold and snowy in the Park which is not very good for animals, but fortunately we had a good storage of forage, which helped animals in the winter. It been around -50C for 2-3 weeks in January-early February. Happy that now it substantially warmed, sun is getting higher above the horizon everyday and now it is not going to be as cold as last month.

Looks like we are going to have quiet a busy year. First of all we need to finish analyzing dat...

Some new Park images and Ocean trip diary

Hi all

First uploading some fresh images from my ranger in the Park. This year looks a bit like 2017-2018 winter. It started to snow in October and already now we have quiet a lot of snow laying on the ground. It is not very good since that creates problems for animals to get enough food on the pastures and also this is not good for the permafrost stability. Lots of snow starting beggining of the winter doesn't allow ground to freeze well, so in 2025 we might have more permafrost degrad...

Month in ice

Hi all!

Been a while since my laptop last been connected to the internet.

As many of you could have known (if you read my previous post), we went on the long expedition to bring musk ox. It started in Vladovostok on July 23. The plan was to take a boat we prepared for the expedition from Vladivostok all the way to Cherskii, load there veterinarians and rangers and head all the way to Taimyr peninsula and catch 18 musk ox on the Begichev Island. Actually distance from Cherskii to...

Musk ox expedition and other updates

Greetings everyone

About a week ago our camel expedition finished and we got 15 camels into the Park succesfully. I been walking in the Park in the recent days and places where first groups of camels roamed look incredibly good - with a lot of good grass and shortened shrubs with lots of leaves on them. So they are indeed a good "tool" to have effect on the ecosystems. So happy that population of camels has increased.

Unfortunately these are all good news we have at the mo...

Pleistocene Park 2024 spring update

Dear Friends

The spring is about to start in the Pleistocene Park and I think it is time to tell you how the winter went, what we been doing in terms of Park development and what plans we have for the future.

Winter wasn’t too cold or snowy (especially first part of it), so overall animals felt themselves good.  We did not have any new animals in the park during the winter and no one was born yet (but hoping to see some babies soon). However we did have quiet a lot of activ...

How Pleistocene Park spent last summer!

Dear Friends

Summer season in the Pleistocene Park is over and I think it is time to report on the results which been achieved in the Park in the last month.

Key element of course was our big expedition to bring new animals for the project. Overall almost every expedition which we made in the last fifteen years (approximately then we started to introduce animals from distant places) could be considered as “extreme and complicated”. However as our skills grew expeditions became...

Same as in the past couple of years we are working to finish the renovation/improvement of the fencing.

In the previous two years we have prepared all ...

Pleistocene Park Winter 2022 update

Dear friends!

We didn't do updates for quiet a while. I think it is time to fix that.

Shortly Pleistocene Project is functioning, animals are grazing, grasses are getting better and our plans to create a world largest and richest ecosystem is not getting reconsidered, despite the circumstances.

Since our last updates there hasn't been too many things happening in the Park. We did not plan any new animal introductions this year, and routine process in the Park -ani...

Summer 2022 Pleistocene Park Update

Greetings everyone!

After quiet a long silence decided to update you all on how things are going in the Park.

Briefly, Pleistocene Park project is running and our efforts to create high productive grazing ecosystems are continuing

It is quiet illegal now in Russia to express opinions about what is going on in Ukraine unless you really want "operation" to continue. Therefore I will keep my opinion to myself and private communications.   Have to admit that operation ...

Winter 2022 Pleistocene Park Update

Dear Friends

I received many messages from our supporters asking how we are doing during this time and if it will be possible to develop the Park in the near future. Thanks for asking and thank you for your support of the Pleistocene Park

First of all want to say that I am in the great frustration about the situation in Ukraine.  According to new Russian laws, it is not legal to express your opinion about it, so just will say that level of my excitement is really high.

November 2021 update

Dear Friends

Hopefully long waited report:)

Now Park is already facing a winter. This year it came quiet early, and now ice on the rivers is already thick enough to drive on a car

Last time I wrote the report for Patreon was when the bison were loaded on a ship to go through Arctic ocean. I think I mentioned that they got stuck for quiet a while in Archangelsk and the ship left on August 15th instead of July 30th. Which was not very good since there is no option to release t...

Camels and goats expedition

Dear Friends

Its been a while since we last posted the update. However I think I have a valid excuse. During most of the last two months we been travelling with very sparse internet connection.

Before I start my long story on how we travelled with camels and goats for 13 thousand kilometers, I want to make a small Patreon related announcement.

If you have already reached  the Voyager of the steppes status or above (if you “lifetime” pledge is equal or above 60 USD) ...

Pleistocene Park 2021 spring update

Dear Friends,

So the new year has started. It is getting slightly warmer in the Pleistocene Park. Sun is rising higher every day. Since it is -30C outside you can't call it a spring yet, but trend is definitely positive:) Animals in the park pass through the winter well. Death rate is low, and usually animals do better in the second part of the winter when it is warmer and sunnier. In any case we have proper storage of forage in case if someone will need extra attention.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Dear Friends!

Pleistocene Park team wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

For many of us it been a complicated year and we all hope that new 2021 will indeed be a happy and successfull year.

For Pleistocene Park 2020 was a mixed year. From one side we did not succeed much in the practical development of the project. We hoped to bring more animals, and accomplish numerous tasks in the  Park. Some of those plans got cancelled, some got postponed, and ...

I don't know how many of you are subscribed to our social networks on Instagram or Facebook, but those who do, are already aware that we had to cancel our expedition to the Wrangel Island.

Musk ox trip is about to start!

Dear Friends.

If everything will go according to the plan, in 24 hours our team will be on the way to the Wrangel Island cruising across the Arctic Ocean.

It been extremely complicated preparations for the expedition, and many times it felt that the expedition will not happen.  2020 is not the best year in general, and for  complicated Arctic expeditions as well.

10 years ago we already made an expedition to the island, but back then it was "still...

Pleistocene Park mid-summer Report.

Greetings everybody!

Our region did get in the world news a lot this summer. According to media it is extremely hot this year. Not sure it is the hottest summer in the Pleistocene Park. But it is very dry for sure.  In May—June there been barely any rain and in the middle of June there been around 10 days of hot weather (the heat wave mentioned in the media). It didn’t get to +38C as in other parts of the Arctic, but +30 is rather untypical  June tempera...

The Musk Ox Plan!

The Musk Ox Plan!

Yes, the Musk Ox. Big Arctic herbivore - hairy, sturdy, rare, just whats needed for the Pleistocene Park.

10 years ago we already brought 6 baby musk ox to the Pleistocene Park. We brought them from the Wrangel Island and it was one of the most extreme and dangerous expeditions we ever made.

It is a 1000km one way through the Arctic Ocean. And it wasn’t entirely successful. After a week roaming in the floating ice, we finally reac...

Another month of your support has passed, and it is time to tell you how did things went in the Park.

In April we didn't have any expeditions with the animals, and we been working in the Park preparing for the summer.

Of the big job we fixed the big fence. Our biggest perimeter was build back in 2005-2006 and by this time some of the poles in the fence decayed or broke and we had to replace them. In the Arctic, with the permafrost present it is not the ea...
