I really didn't like Xander in this episode. He tried to do the mature deep friend thing, I guess. but tbh, his 'Riley is a once-in-a-lifetime guy' speech was so obviously about himself. He projected hardcore onto that whole speech. He has literally never stopped resenting Buffy for not liking 'normal safe guys' and it occasionally makes him treat her like shit despite his otherwise deep connection with her. His whole speech boiled down to "I know he betrayed you enough that it should end the relationship but your feelings for him aren't gone yet so why are you letting him go?" which is one of the reasons abused people hang on to their relationships even though they should let go. "I still love him so maybe I can fix this." But she is NEVER going to know when it's enough for Riley and it might never actually be enough and he'll just keep holding it over her head that she's not giving enough of herself to him. She already thought she was giving everything, so what else is she going to give him to make it work? He'd just end up 'cheating' again because he feels inadequate and he's taking it out on Buffy.

It continues to disappoint me that they went out of their way to have Buffy feel like SHE failed. And while I loved Xander being an adult and trying to be a real friend to Buffy, without irony or joking around, unfortunately I think his interpretation is wrong here. As Lexi said, the outcome is the right one ... Riley gone! But making Buffy look like the loser leaves a bad taste. On the other hand, I LOVE Xander’s little speech to Anya. It’s one of the most beautiful pieces of dialog in the whole franchise.

I always interpreted Riley’s comment about men taking care of themselves as him just trying to get Buffy to leave ASAP, since they needed to clear the area. With his admission that her being stronger than him is difficult, perhaps I was mistaken.

Buffy was right, their relationship was doomed from the start. Buffy just isn't Riley's type. A big hint came before they were dating. When Buffy asked, "So you think men can take care of themselves but girls need help?" Riley,"Yes." "You've been treating Riley like he's the rebound guy. When he's the one who comes along once in a lifetime." Someone has an opinion as to how Buffy's been treating Riley and what he should mean to her. Please. He shoved her into going after him imo. And If she had caught him and asked him to stay? They just would have put it off anyway. They aren't compatible. Like Buffy said, "This is the package." She doesn't have what he needs.
