I love the role reversal here. Giles is the one in emotional crisis. Giles is the one in need... and Buffy is there for him... with support and help.

Yeah i think it was plenty of dark for Giles but personally i would have loved to see something darker
But yeah i can see how anything more crazy would have been too much for the show

I was hoping for something darker and cooler but in the grand scheme of things, it is better it is something that wasn’t that bad but it was amplified by how ashamed Giles felt about it. If it wasn’t for that incident, I think Giles would continue down the darker path. He was being reckless, doing all sorts of things when he was in London. Don’t forget, this was a ritual (and the ones like it) they were kind of doing regularly, like using drugs but worse because the consequences are broader. Then the worst case scenario did happen which ended up with them having to kill a person...and all was just with the idea of pleasure. So, Giles was a badass “Ripper”. We were just shown a small glimpse of the shady stuff he was in. But again, it was more about how he wanted to completely move on and forget that part of his past. It coming back, haunting him, now that he started his new life, and as a father figure to this young person, he feels more bothered by it. That’s why I like this direction more, I think it is deeply personal and more revealing about Giles as a person than any other grander, more elaborate “dark secret”. Especially if they made him “evil” in any way, it would really disturb the heart of the show imo.
