THE WHOLE DAY DOWN

South Korean model Rose visited the United States for the first time back in January. She was excited and eager to explore, as well as continue to model, which has become one of her favorite new hobbies the last few years. Somehow she knew of me, and even though she was staying in LA, she was happy to travel the four hours by bus to come up to my small hometown and shoot with me. I picked her up from the bus stop and took her back to my house, where I gave her snacks, had her meet my fianceé, and shot a bunch before going out for a drive and shooting more outdoors, where this particular set was taken.

Her English wasn’t bad, though at times we struggled to communicate the finer points of the language. And she definitely didn’t get all of my sarcastic, goofy comments, so I downshifted into the way I speak when i travel in Europe, which is clear, slow, deliberate, and matter-of-fact. This approach seemed to work better.

And thankfully, above all else, she was a great model! She was comfortable in her skin, enjoyed being creative and weird and goofy. She also confessed that her conservative family doesn’t support her work very much, but she’s happy doing what she does. I learned she works a day job, saves her money, then travels around Asia, and now America, to pursue work with photographers whose work she admired. 

We had a fun time and have plans to work together again next time she visits, or on the off chance I visit South Korea!
