First Patreon Transparency Report
Added 2020-11-01 14:34:39 +0000 UTCMy degree, and first jobs out of college, were accounting jobs. Money, how it flows, debits and credits, reporting, and transparency, are deeply ingrained.
As a result, I figure that while I could keep everything private, I might as well let all of you who care know the current financial breakdown of BTDEM.
Note: This is a lot of boring financials, and not really worth digging into unless you're deeply interested.
Expenses so far:
Book 1 Cover: $350
Magic Circle Artwork: $50 + $15 in tips
Patreon/Royal Road Artwork Banner: $185 + $10 tip for early completion
Patreon Icons: $25 (Same artist as the magic circle)
Royal Road Premium: $5+$5
Book 2 Cover (Incentive for reaching 50 Patreons): $350 (Same artist)
Total expenses: $995
Revenues:
September:
Baseline: $31
Refunds: $0
Fees: $5.40
Operating Income: $25.60
October:
Baseline: $385.88
Refunds: $0
Fees: $71.02
Operating Income: $314.86
Operating Income September + October: 340.46
Total Profit/Loss: ($654.54)
I do plan on putting the book on Amazon (chapters 1-50 are "book 1"), and with a tiny amount of luck, I'll be able to get the $350 cover artwork fee back from that.
All Patrons will get a free version of the e-book if I ever figure out how to make it work.
The work will always be on Patreon and Royal Road - I'm not going down the Kindle Unlimited route.

Other authors gives their books to Patron people via Bookfunnel. Could be a good option for you. And continue with the good work :)

2020-11-02 03:22:41 +0000 UTCThe only thoughts I have, is that rather than going through the trouble of trying to give a free ebook for the Patreon people, why not just create a special edition PDF version and only give it to those of Patreon? I'm only thinking this so that you wouldn't have to try and figure out how to get the company that you go through to give a free version to certain people. Just a thought.... plus as a special way to show who it goes to, you can always have it digitally signed or something. :)

2020-11-01 22:12:18 +0000 UTCKU prevents you from keeping the book up for free on RR. I'd stay away from KU for that reason.

2020-11-01 21:58:11 +0000 UTCYes, but KU demands exclusivity, and so people on RR and patreon wouldn't be able to read it anymore. I've spent untold hours reading things on RR and other related websites, and I'm not going to take my toys and go home - I want to give back as much as I can. Amazon is more "Let me make a few extra bucks" than "This is the primary way I'm getting money"

2020-11-01 21:16:14 +0000 UTCHonestly, if you plan on publishing on Amazon you really should go for KU. I very, very rarely buy a book now unless I know the author or have already read it on KU. I read 1 or 2 books a day on KU and know I'm not alone in that especially during Covid.
