System Details - Warning! Spoilers inside!
Added 2020-10-12 13:24:55 +0000 UTCHello all! Welcome to another worldbuilding backend, System Details!
This goes into details about what unlocks at what level. Have you ever wondered when Elaine will get a new class? Have you ever wondered what the secret behind the third class is?
8. 8 is the number that everything revolves around. 8 stats. 8 elements. 8 skills. It's all about the number 8. Fun fact - I almost made the number system that people used base 8, but I was getting confused, let alone readers. Just imagine, if you will, that people use base 8 as their counting system, and that I made everything base 10 for your ease of reading.
So it should come as no real surprise that I have a base "starter class" that unlocks at level 8. I was originally going to have the first class unlock at level 8, but realized that wouldn't work. You can't level up your first class if your first class unlocks at level 8. That was an awkward moment in my writing to say the least.
So with level 8 being the "first" class, it's not too surprising that the second class unlocks at level 64. The third class unlocks at level 512 - 8x8x8. So what happens at level 4096? (8x8x8x8) - That's a Major Spoiler, but I will say the book will end right around then. A few extra chapters of wrapping up, but hitting the cap ends the series, hopefully in a satisfying way. If I get there, the vague plan is to write a second series, probably also set on Pallos. But that's going down a winding side path.
Class upgrades! Classes will upgrade when they hit the following levels:
32
128
256
768
1024
1536
2048
2560
3072
3584
When classing up, you have a few options. Going into the details:
1) The easy mode- you pick a new class that's offered to you, an upgrade of your current class.
2) For some reason, you decide you don't want an upgrade, and you keep the same class.
3) You can "Reset" a class. When you're at a class change, you can instead of getting a new class, or staying the same, choose from one of the options initially offered to you, and get an initial class at level 8 again. All of your skills and stats from that class will be lost, it'd be like the last few years of work and effort towards that old class never happened. Good if you're making a mid-life change, or got forced to take a shit class in the first place. Bad in almost every other circumstances.
4) You can also "Revert" a class. In other words, drop the class and the level down, instead of up.
Let me use Elaine, and her library-tower as an example. When she enters the world inside of her to choose her class, she sees a library, with books as classes. There's a staircase leading up to the next level, and there are many more levels of the library - each corresponding to the next tier of classes. She can't see what's above, but she can always choose something on a lower level (If they're not duplicated higher up). So for example, she enters for her level 256 class change. Everything that was on the first floor is an option still - but nothing new is unlocked. So Elaine could rip out her current class, and become a level 8 [World Traveler] for example. Painful, messy, but an option.
She can go to the second floor, and have the option of reverting back to the class she used to have when she changed to level 32. If it was her first class, she'd get [Light of Hope] as a class back. A massive drop, and loses a bunch of the flexibility from choosing something entirely new at level 8, but an option none the less.
There's nothing she can do on the third floor, her 128 class change. That's because that's her current class. You can't revert back to what you currently are, that makes no sense.
Finally, and most common, on the fourth floor are the books for her 256 class change. Here she'll be offered a small variety of different books to choose from. There will be a few extra books here and there, ones she's aware of but fails to meet the requirements, but it's less "massive rows of books", and more "Here are a few precious books under glass" for her to look through.
Now nothing stops Elaine from having a nice reading break on the 1st floor, and spending time exploring.
Characters and what they see when they class up:
Elaine: A library, with books to check out.
Lyra: A temple, with altars to pray at.
Elainus (Elaine's dad): A town full of guards, each one slightly different. He chooses one to partner with.
Artemis: An open field/arena, filled with mages. She chooses one to learn from.
Julia (Elaine's mom): Spoons! Drawers full, stirring spoons on counters, soup-ladling spoons hanging from the ceiling. Grab your spoon, grab your destiny.
Have another character you want to see? Ask!

Ask!"</i> I would ask for every major character of the story from Remus. Along from every other of the school ark. I won't, though. Because it is a waste of creativity and time if it doesn't end up in the books.
